First-Time Author Shares Her Vision of Boy’s Steps to Better Vision

And things aren’t much better at school because he mixes up numbers written on the board and everyone laughs. But as a new book released by Dog Ear Publishing reveals, the problem isn’t with Matt but with his eyes – he needs glasses.
On the bus ride home from school one day, Matt realizes all of the street signs he’s passing are blurry. He knows that can’t be right. Instead, it must be his vision. If he starts to wear glasses, however, kids might make fun of him, calling him a nerd or four eyes. But after talking to his mom, he realizes he needs to see an optometrist, a doctor who specializes in testing the eyes. During the exam he realizes he can see clearly for the first time, and once he gets his glasses a transformation of sorts takes place, leading to some surprising results.
“Eyeglasses are a Home Run” works on two levels: as a charming story about a boy whose world changes after he gets glasses and as a gentle reminder about the importance of eye exams for children beyond what a school nurse can provide. Two doctors of optometry share the author’s concern that children be given annual eye exams because of the relationship between vision and learning.
