About the Juror
The Erie Art Museum has chosen Dave Hickey, writer and art critic, as the Juror of Selection and Awards.
“Dave has written for and has been written about in many well known publications,” said John Vanco, director of the Erie Art Museum. “Dave is immensely interested in art, whether he finds it understandable or not.”
A former gallery owner and songwriter, Hickey recently curated the fourth Site Santa Fe (NM) Biennial, which he titled “Beau Monde”. For this he was awarded the 2001-2002 Best Show in Kunsthalle Award from the Association of International Critics of Art. He is currently professor of Art Criticism and Theory at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
As a curator, Hickey is fearless and not prone to being overly charmed. He has the ability to articulate what he sees in clear, swift running, intellectually stimulating prose. He often draws illuminating unexpected parallels between things like Shakespeare’s sonnets and Robert Maplethorpe’s Portfolio X. His lectures are notoriously entertaining, thought-provoking, and feather-ruffling events. His essays have worked their way into contemporary art criticism in the relatively brief time since their publication.
Hickey’s visit is made possible through collaboration between the Erie Art Museum and Edinboro University of PA. Hickey will give a free public lecture at Edinboro University’s Cole Memorial Auditorium on April 9, 2008 at 7 p.m.
