Commonwealth Awards $3.05 Million Infrastructure Grant to Marlborough
MassWorks Grant to fund Rt. 20 renovation, unlock $160 million in commercial development.
Marlborough, MA, November 03, 2016 --(PR.com)-- The Commonwealth of Massachusetts announced today a $3.05 million MassWorks Infrastructure Program grant to fund roadway improvements along Route 20 West, including new turn lanes and upgraded signals, in support of the Apex Center of New England.
Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker and Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito made the announcement today in the City of Worcester, which also received two MassWorks grants. The program aims to support new job creation, private investment in mixed-use development, and workforce training.
“MassWorks allows us to support public infrastructure investments generating immediate investments that bring new jobs and housing to our cities and towns,” said Governor Baker. “It is also one of our most flexible programs, empowering communities to seek effective solutions to local priorities, and allowing the Administration to focus on funding projects that will generate substantial, long-term regional growth.”
“Our administration’s ongoing, close collaboration with cities and towns allows us to identify shared opportunities to unlock economic growth through targeted infrastructure improvements,” said Lieutenant Governor Polito. “This year’s infrastructure investments will help communities to grow their local economy, support job creation, and encourage sustainable development, in line with municipal goals and character.”
The $160 million mixed-use Apex Center development in Marlborough will feature two new hotels, 200,000 square feet of entertainment and retail space, 110,000 square feet of new office space, and six new restaurants, bringing new amenities to the region’s residents and employers.
“The Apex Center is an exciting development that will bring new restaurants, hotels, and entertainment to Marlborough,” said Marlborough Mayor Arthur Vigeant. “The project will not only be great for our residents, but it will also help attract new employers and prospective employees to our city. I’m grateful to Governor Baker and Lieutenant Governor Polito for their continued support of Marlborough – these MassWorks funds will be used to upgrade the transportation infrastructure in the vicinity of the Apex Center project. In addition to the upgrades that the Apex Center developers are performing themselves, these investments in our infrastructure will benefit this part of Marlborough long into the future.”

The MassWorks Infrastructure Program provides a one-stop shop for municipalities and other eligible public entities seeking public infrastructure funding to support housing production, economic development, and job creation.
The 2016 grant round generated 114 applications, requesting $287 million in public infrastructure grant funding. Infrastructure projects awarded in the 2016 grant round will generate $1 billion in private investment in communities.
Each year, the MassWorks program allocates 10 percent of awarded funds to assist municipalities with populations of 7,000 or less in completing roadway safety and transportation improvement projects. Since its inception in 2011, the MassWorks program has invested $419 million through competitive grant rounds, in 223 projects throughout the Commonwealth.
In August 2016, Governor Baker signed An Act Relative to Job Creation and Workforce Development (H.4569) to reauthorize MassWorks and support $500 million of future investment in critical infrastructure, a significant commitment by the Commonwealth. The Baker-Polito Administration has increased MassWorks funding by $35 million over the past two fiscal years.
