Shorecrest Welcomes Et Cultura: A Festival of Creative Culture
St. Petersburg, FL, November 09, 2016 --(PR.com)-- The City of St. Petersburg will soon welcome the inaugural Et Cultura festival, a 5-day, multi-event celebration of creative culture. Modeled after the iconic South by Southwest festival held in Austin, TX, St. Pete’s Et Cultura brings film, music, art, makers and innovators together for five days of cultural activities in the heart of the Sunshine City, November 16-20. As an organization committed to creativity, innovation, and community, Shorecrest Preparatory School is a part of the week’s events.
Dr. Anna Baralt, Shorecrest Director of Educational Technology, will join a panel of area experts for day 1 of Et Cultura Interactive. The panel, “Emerging Technologies,” is a discussion of what is new and emerging in the tech world and how it affects daily life and the educational environment of the future.
Baralt, a veteran educator and longtime Shorecrest faculty member, is internationally recognized as a thought leader in educational technology. She is a member of the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) Standards Core Team and was recently selected to travel to Malaysia to train an international group of technology coaches. ISTE has adopted the Shorecrest scope & sequence, the creation of which was led by Baralt, as its official standards for best practices in educational technology. Baralt also championed Shorecrest’s application for the Apple Distinguished School Program, a distinction which was given to the school in October.
Similarly, Shorecrest music teacher and band director Ethan Updike will join a panel titled “The Intersection of Music and Technology” and discuss the creation of the iPad Music Ensemble at Shorecrest, a class that uses the electronic instruments found on GarageBand to teach rhythmic dictation and other elements of music reading.
Updike, a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy, received his Bachelor of Music in trumpet performance and Master of Music Teaching degrees from Oberlin Conservatory of Music where he also received K-12 Music Certification. He has served as principal trumpet of the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra and has participated in everything from drum corps to chamber music. He has performed in master classes with Wynton Marsalis, Michael Phillip Mossman, Rob Roy McGregor, and many others. His primary trumpet teachers include Roy Poper (Oberlin Conservatory of Music) and Ken Larson (Interlochen Arts Academy). Updike is a recent addition to the Shorecrest music faculty and is leading the program’s evolution.
Shorecrest Art faculty member Aaron Sober rounds out the lineup of Shorecrest speakers. Sober has been a member of the Shorecrest Upper School art faculty since 2014, teaching 3D Design, Computer Graphics and Digital Film. Aaron received his M.F.A. from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and has nearly 20 years of experience in education and the fine arts. His work has been featured at shows and galleries nationally, including The American Craft Exhibition, Penland School of Crafts Gallery, The American Craft Council Market, AKAR Gallery, The Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston, and Baltimore Clayworks. His work was also recently published in American iPottery, available on the iTunes store.

The week’s activities culminate in a weekend Makers Market, featuring 150+ booths from local + traveling designers, makers, artisans and small businesses. Shorecrest is proud to present the Et Kidtura | Imagination Station family area of the Makers Market, where children can enjoy story time with Keep St. Pete Lit, a pop-up rock band with Noisemakers, create a cardboard castle with Bloom artists, and more.
