"Strategic Ambiguity" by Hao Ni at Peligro Amarillo / Santurce
San Juan, PR, November 24, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Peligro Amarillo / Santurce is pleased to present Strategic Ambiguity by New York-based Taiwanese artist Hao Ni, featuring an eclectic series of mixed media installations, sculptures and video, from December 2016 – January 2017. The opening reception is Saturday, December 17, at Calle Cerra 627 in Santurce, the arts district of San Juan, Puerto Rico, from 7PM – 10PM.
Strategic ambiguity is a common practice by a country of being intentionally ambiguous on certain aspects of its foreign policy. It may be useful if the country has contrary foreign and domestic policy goals or if it wants to take advantage of risk aversion to abet a deterrence strategy. Such a policy can be very risky as it may cause misinterpretation of a nation's intentions, leading to actions that contradict that nation's wishes, but at the same time open up possibilities that would otherwise be unavailable.
In Strategic Ambiguity, Ni introduces new works that compare and contrast the island politics between Taiwan and Puerto Rico, specifically the ambiguities regarding international status, uncertainties from their colonial pasts, as well as the changing environments and threats of large-scale disasters.
Strategic Ambiguity highlights Ni’s unique artistic practice that incorporates unconventional, yet vaguely familiar objects such as air filters, flags, soap and faux rice. Drawing from daily rituals, political metaphors, and personal memories, Ni imagines ambiguity not only as an aesthetic opportunity, but also as a survival strategy in real world situations.
The opening reception for Strategic Ambiguity is Saturday, December 17, from 7PM – 10PM. The exhibition will conclude at the end of January 2017. This is Hao Ni’s first solo exhibition at Peligro Amarillo / Santurce. Most recently, he presented Sleep Mode, the second solo exhibition ever at Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles from August – September 2016.
About Hao Ni
Hao Ni (b. 1989, Hsin Chu, Taiwan) received his MFA in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2014. He has exhibited his work in group and solo shows in Providence, New York, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles and Taipei, including venues like Taipei Fine Arts Museum in Taiwan, Queens Museum in New York, and New Bedford Art Museum in Massachusetts.
