The Blue Hat Foundation, Inc., Accepted Into Membership of the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable

The Blue Hat Foundation is the newest organization invited into membership to the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable.

Chicago, IL, December 04, 2016 --(PR.com)-- The Blue Hat Foundation, Inc., a faith-based, colorectal (colon) cancer organization whose mission is to raise awareness, educate and provide resources to minority and medically underserved communities became the newest member of the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable, a partnership of over 100 member organizations across the U.S., committed to taking action in the screening, prevention, and early detection of colorectal cancer.

About the Blue Hat Foundation, Inc.:
The Blue Hat Foundation, Inc. is committed to helping raise awareness and education about colorectal cancer and early screening in minority and medically underserved communities.

Officially launched as a non-profit on December 15, 2015, prompted by its founder, Candace Henley, who experienced her own personal struggles after a colon cancer diagnosis at the age of 36. Ms. Henley was diagnosed with Stage IIB colorectal (colon) cancer in June 2003 in a hospital emergency room, after being misdiagnosed for six months. Because she did not meet the age criteria for colon cancer screening (50 years old), no one thought to screen her, despite presenting with textbook symptoms of colon cancer and two prior surgeries to remove her uterus and ovaries as a result. After spending nine days in the hospital and undergoing surgery to remove 95% of her colon, Ms. Henley returned home unprepared for a cancer diagnosis and sustaining life after it. Unable to work, she was denied Social Security Disability (SSD) because, according to SSD, not having a colon did not render her disabled, and her employer short-term disability pay was not enough. These series of unfortunate events eventually left her homeless, fighting cancer with five children, and so distraught, that she attempted suicide, without success, and emerged as a strong fighter and inspiration to those who hear her story.

About the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable:
The Roundtable, established by the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 1997, is a national coalition of public, private, and voluntary organizations and invited individuals dedicated to reducing the incidence of and mortality from colorectal cancer in the U.S., through coordinated leadership, strategic planning, and advocacy. The ultimate goal of the Roundtable is to increase the use of proven colorectal cancer screening tests among the entire population for whom screening is appropriate.
