#ServingHopeLV Teamed Up with HUD to Serve 5,000 Low-Income Families in Summer of Feeding Program
Many low-income families in Las Vegas - including senior citizens and children - face hunger as a daily reality. #ServingHopeLV teamed up with HUD to help eliminate hunger in Southern Nevada.
Las Vegas, NV, December 10, 2016 --(PR.com)-- There are approximately 315,000 people in Clark County who face food insecurity at any given moment. During the school year, many of the children of these families receive meals at school, but that leaves them hungry over weekends and school breaks. Summer months can be particularly devastating to these children, who rely on school to be able to eat.
The Las Vegas Housing and Urban Development Office (HUD) reached out to #ServingHopeLV - a “give-forward” organization dedicated to feeding the hungry of the Las Vegas community, where they are homeless, unemployed, or underemployed - to help them with a new feeding mission. HUD was receiving assistance in feeding the children who were on summer break through the USDA, State of Nevada, and a partnership with The Culinary Academy, but there were many senior citizens who were not being served, which left them hungry. #ServingHopeLV was asked to support the efforts of The Culinary Academy and the others who were serving children, as well as helping to serve the needs of the senior citizens, who were often left hungry while living on a fixed income that was far below the poverty line.
As a result, #ServingHopeLV - along with the other dedicated organizations - was able to serve 5,000 low-income families, including both the children and seniors who so desperately needed assistance. The coalition of organizations served a mix of low-income homes owned by HUD, which housed many families in need.
Throughout the summer, #ServingHopeLV serviced six different properties including:
· Two HUD properties with a combined total of 395 units, primarily comprised of single moms and dads who are working multiple part-time jobs who can’t keep food in the refrigerator.
· One HUD property for senior citizens, of which 85 units were in need and served by #ServingHopeLV.
· One HUD-operated community garden that served an average of 35 seniors.
· A 36-trailer trailer park that #ServingHopeLV continues to serve to this day, which has a mix of single parents, seniors, and handicapped individuals.
· One church that #ServingHopeLV continues to serve to this day. Roughly 35 families show up to the church each week.
Moses says, “There are so many people in our city who do not know where their next meal is coming from. Many people have been made aware of the hunger problem that children and families face, but very few people realize the challenges that senior citizens face when their retirement income falls far below even basic needs. It is important that we raise awareness of this important issue and continue to support people of all ages in Las Vegas. No one, of any age, deserves to go hungry.” He adds, “HUD, the USDA, the State of Nevada, and The Culinary Academy have done some amazing work with these families, and supporting their efforts took our mission to feed Las Vegas’s hungry to the next level. We continue to seek such partnerships, and it is our hope that, with the help of these other organizations and dedicated volunteers, there will come a day that hunger in Las Vegas is completely eliminated.”

#ServingHopeLV is a completely independent grassroots community give-back organization dedicated to eliminating homelessness and poverty in the Vegas Valley through giftivism - genuine acts of kindness so radical that they spark change in not just ourselves, but the world, as well. Last year, alone, #ServingHopeLV gave away 64,000 individual meals to those who couldn’t afford one, had over 5,000 volunteers join them in their cause, and saved 100 lives from homelessness by placing them into permanent housing.
