Carolyn Cole: COLOR
Opening reception: March 14, 2008 5-8PM

Mary Bell Galleries is proud to showcase COLOR, the latest works by renowned abstract artist Carolyn Cole, which opens Friday March 14, 2008 and closes April 16, 2008.

Cole's paintings are dense surfaces combining abstraction, geometry and numerous layers of paint. Working with copies of old handwritten letters and envelopes, Cole paints over the images, obstructing much of the text and communication. Scraping the surface with a palette knife to reveal the layers underneath, Cole then paints into the exposed areas.

“For me, Painting is a passion. I love to create surfaces that are visually intriguing and mysterious, with expressive colors and shapes. Each of my paintings has many layers of paint…By building up layers of paint and collage, the paintings become infused with a cultural history, at the same time allowing the viewer to create a personal history.”

A magna cum laude graduate of Portland State University in 1977, her work has been exhibited all over the United States, including the Seattle Art Museum and Portland Art Museum. She spent ten years as an artist in New York City, where she exhibited extensively before settling back into the Northwest in 1991. She is represented by galleries in Portland, Ashland, San Francisco, Santa Fe, Chicago and Carmel. Her paintings are included in numerous private and public collections such as former Vice President Al Gore, Walt Disney Productions, Campbell Soup Company, and the Heinz Corporation.
