GFAS Announces Avian Advocacy Series for National Bird Day 2017

Washington, DC, January 07, 2017 --(PR.com)-- Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), an international sanctuary accreditation body is announcing a new webinar series they are sponsoring in recognition of National Bird Day on January 5, 2017.

The two-part series, which will begin on Tuesday, January 31 at 1:30 p.m. EST, will explore a topic that is necessary and long overdue– Avian Advocacy. Part one of the series will be on avian outreach and campaigns and the important role and responsibilities that captive exotic wildlife sanctuaries have in education. Part two will focus on avian law and suggested approaches to expanding legal protections for birds.

Organized by the Avian Welfare Coalition (AWC), an organization whose mission is to raise awareness to the plight of captive birds, this two-part series will focus on the basic guidelines for implementing an effective advocacy campaign and a review of current laws and approaches to improving protections for captive birds.

Representatives from animal shelters, avian rescue centers and sanctuaries, and bird advocates are invited to join a roundtable series in which key experts will be available to address a number of common questions regarding concerns that impact captive bird welfare in shelters and private situations.

“The need for legal protections for captive birds cannot be understated. This can only happen if the animal protection and avian welfare communities advocate collaboratively on behalf of these often-unserved and forgotten animals,” says Denise Kelly, AWC President.

Kellie Heckman, Executive Director of GFAS, added that “We are excited to expand the scope of our avian education program to provide tools to avian care facilities and bird advocates to help initiate effective outreach on behalf of captive birds. With this series, we are promoting a better understanding of animal law and how it can be applied to promote the well-being of captive birds effectively now and in the future.”

Additional series on topics related to new approaches to avian care and behavior are planned for later in the year.
