American Academy for Film and Gender Studies Releases Lesbian Rape Preview
Los Angeles, CA, February 01, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Controversial documentary filmmakers Justine Chang and Armand Kaye released the first official trailer for the controversial documentary “she stole my voice: A Documentary About Lesbian Rape” today. The film, which has been scheduled for pre-release through several online retailers, is the first major documentary to examine sexual assault and rape between women.
“Few people can even imagine one woman raping another,” stated Justine Chang, who directed the film. “Because of the social gender roles assigned to women, the idea seems almost impossible. But the actual numbers are staggering, and the ways in which women commit sexual violence and rape against each other can be horrific.”
The film has been controversial because of both its message and its graphic content. “This film is critical of the way in which many parts of society consider sexual violence. That includes the lesbian community itself, and it is not a message that people are totally comfortable with.” The film also contains explicit reenactments based on actual lesbian rapes. According to Chang, “Although the reenactments are intense, they have been less controversial. People who watch the film understand how central those reenactments are to the message of the film. You can’t really emotionally respond to something you cannot visualize. Lesbian rape is so complex, and so difficult to visualize, that a documentary that didn’t really show them would be basically powerless.”
“she stole my voice: A Documentary About Lesbian Rape” is available through online retailers, including Amazon.com and Filmbaby.com, in anticipation of its official release later this year.
