Minority Baker Offers Delicious Diabetic-Friendly Desserts
African-American female baker will be doing a series of Food Demonstrations at various locations during the month of March.
Deptford, NJ, February 15, 2017 --(PR.com)-- According to the American Diabetes Association, 13.2% of African-Americans aged 20 and older have diagnosed Diabetes. That’s a disproportionate number compared to the general population. One of the contributing factors to this disease is the over-consumption of sugar, particularly High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). For most Diabetics this means having to eat dry, tasteless desserts. Adrienne D. Smith, an established pastry chef & owner of Adrienne’s Classic Desserts, aims to change that with her delicious "no sugar added" cakes & pies. Throughout the month of March, she will be conducting Food Demos at various locations.
What started Adrienne on this journey was when her husband learned that he is allergic to High Fructose Corn Syrup. “He broke out in hives and was itching terribly,” she says. But he didn’t want to give up sweets. So Adrienne turned to baking, with a strong focus on finding sugar replacements that didn’t have an aftertaste. Took a while to get the recipes just right, but she finally came up with desserts that her husband loved. Before long, Adrienne was bringing her baked goods whenever family and friends got together. Some of her family members are Diabetic and were thrilled that they could eat the same sweets as everyone else. They encouraged her to start her own business.
Adrienne’s interest in baking was sparked when she was about 10 years old, watching her parents cook. (Her father was a baker.) After starting her own company, she took baking classes to sharpen her skills. She began selling her products to co-workers, attending events and participating in trade shows. In 2010, Adrienne’s Classic Desserts became a limited liability company. Then she found out about the Eastern Minority Supplier Development Council. The Council provides minority businesses with access to companies that want to do business with minority-owned companies. Adrienne also began using marketing brokers, which provide access to other segments of the market.
Adrienne’s Classic Desserts can now be found all across the Mid-Atlantic USA at places like Whole Foods, Mohegan Sun Casino & Resort, Landis Supermarkets, A&M Farm Market, Harrah’s Racetrack & Casino, Dover Downs Hotel & Casino and Linvilla Orchards Farm Market.
