About Caitlin Fennessy
Caitlin Fennessy is a senior policy advisor with the Data Flows and Privacy Team at the U.S. International Trade Administration (ITA). Since joining ITA in 2009, Caitlin has focused on privacy policy and transborder data flow issues as they impact trade. Caitlin leads ITA’s work on European privacy issues and from 2014 through 2016 served as part of the Department of Commerce’s EU-U.S. Privacy Shield negotiating team. Following the adoption of the Framework, Caitlin became the Department of Commerce’s Data Protection Authority (DPA) Liaison under the Privacy Shield. Caitlin has also led ITA’s work to increase the interoperability of the APEC Cross Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) System and EU Binding Corporate Rules (BCRs) to assist industry in cross-regional compliance.
Caitlin currently sits on the Research Advisory Board of the International Association of Privacy Professionals. In 2015 and 2016, Caitlin also served as an adjunct professor of international privacy policy at the University of Maine School of Law.
Event Synopsis:
On October 6, 2015, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) invalidated the European Commission’s adequacy determination for the Safe Harbor Framework, creating an urgent need for a new transatlantic data transfer mechanism. The adoption of the EU-US Privacy Shield in July 2016 was a breakthrough for transatlantic data protection and cross-border data transfers between Europe and America. The agreement redefines how U.S-based participating businesses must collect and transfer personal data of EU citizens to the US and across the Atlantic.
Eight months after its adoption, The Knowledge Group has assembled a panel of key thought leaders to provide the audience with an in-depth analysis of the latest updates and issues surrounding the E.U-US Privacy Shield. In this two-hour Live Webcast, speakers will help both EU and US companies understand the important aspects of this significant agreement. They will discuss the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which will take effect in May 2018 and under which existing adequacy determinations, such as the Privacy Shield are grandfathered. They will also offer best practices in developing and implementing a privacy-compliance program.
Key topics include:
EU-US Privacy Shield Framework
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
Safe Harbor Vs. Privacy Shield
The Latest Updates and Issues on EU-US Privacy Shield
The Impacts of EU-US Privacy Shield in:

- US Businesses in the Europe
