Outskirts Poet’s New Book Compiles Thirty Years of Life in Verse
Wide-ranging life experiences that hold a universal resonance form the basis of “Once Upon a Rhyme: Year of the Winds,” the new book of poems from Outskirts Press author Daniel Ray Farley.
Chicago, IL, February 11, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Few books can blend topics as diverse as man’s relationship to God with the simple pleasures of heavy metal music. But Daniel Ray Farley manages to wring profound meaning from these and many other themes in “Once Upon a Rhyme: Year of the Winds,” his new book of poems just released from Outskirts Press.
Now available through the author’s Web site, at www.outskirtspress.com/onceuponarhyme, the book follows a unique format that attempts to resemble a “mystical year, in seasons of riddles and rhyme,” Farley says. This temporal organization chronicles the author’s ruminations, culled from often painful personal history, over the past 30 years, bringing into sharp focus poignant reflections on time’s passage, love, life and death.
Often, these reflections are sobering: In “D.T. Island,” the speaker casts a cold eye on the reality and aftermath of alcoholism, painting a disturbing portrait of the disease’s ravages in a mere four stanzas of rhyming couplets; “Dear Father Hear Me Praying” finds Farley’s speaker examining a troubled world and finding it beyond repair, prompting a desperate beseeching of a higher authority for assistance. But there are lighter moments, too, as in “It’s Heavy Metal, It Will Never Die.” In it, the speaker encounters a traveler who endorses the artistic merits of that musical genre: “It’s heavy metal, it’ll make you fly! / This rockin soul music, it will never die!”
Threaded through all of the more than 40 poems included in this collection is a deep appreciation for the music and meanings of words, ensuring the poems are sure to resonate long after readers close the book.

Format: 7.5 x 9.25 Paperback Pages: 108 SRP: $14.95 Genre: Composition & Creative Writing - Poetry
About the Author: Writing is nothing new for East Chicago, Ind. native Daniel Ray Farley. The poems collected in “Once Upon a Rhyme” were penned over a 30-year history, and his love affair with the word extends to his teenage years, a time in which he penned lyrics for a rock ’n’ roll band. Life experiences inform his work, and Farley considers the publication of his first volume of poetry, soon after overcoming an addiction to alcohol, among his crowning achievements.
