About Zonia Elvas Velasco
Ms. Velasco has over 48 years experience as a physical therapist, and over 20 years experience as an Oriental Medicine Doctor and acupuncturist. She is the President and CEO of Zen Wellness, which is a wellness center, reflexology and physical therapy facility in Dallas, Texas. They provide physical therapy, reflexology, and KMERT (Ki Meridian Energy Regulation Therapy). She also serves as a physical therapist in a skilled nursing rehabilitation facility and as a manual therapist in an out-patient setting. Putting both training and experience together in both Western and Eastern medicines, she developed and created the KMERT system, which is a manual therapy that brings wellness and healing to the body faster, and is primarily used to manage pain and dysfunction by normalizing and regulating the flow of body energy or chi in the meridian systems. She has two books in progress on the KMERT system, and on Oriental Cupping Therapy.

Born in the Philippines, Ms. Velasco obtained a B.S. in Physical Therapy from the University of the Philippines in 1968, and an Oriental Medicine Doctor degree from Beijing College of Acupuncture in 1992. She was also the Founder and Artistic Director of the Filipino Fork Arts Theatre from 1988 through 2005, serving as a choreographer, music director, choir director, music arranger, librettist of stage and television productions, researcher and producer of many television programs pertaining to Filipino and Asian culture. She has written libretti for numerous stage plays including “The Legend of the Sarimanok,” “Princess Tarhata,” “Jose Rizal’s Dream.” She has also written several books on “Alibata-Baybayin,” and “Kali Arnis.” Known for her ability to produce big productions, she was the executive director for President Cory Aquino’s Welcome to Dallas in 1988, which had more than 250 performers. From 1988 through 2005, she has produced and directed more than 1000 stage performances. Ms. Velasco also produced and directed more than 36 shows for Dallas Community Television related to Filipino dance and music from 1996 through 2005. She was awarded the First Place Crystal Award in 2004, and has received numerous awards for Best in Set Decoration and Best in Cultural Programs.

Ms. Velasco was a Coloratura Soprano artist and specialized in difficult classical Filipino songs. She is a recording artist, and her CD on “East and West” contained classical Filipino songs, as well as American hymns and religious songs. To preserve her heritage, she made recordings on Filipino folk songs, and instrumental Kulintang Filipino Music. She was also an outstanding artist for the Neighborhood Touring Program for the City of Dallas Cultural Arts Program, and has co-produced a meditation CD playing piano with a Bolivian flute artist. She also became a martial artist, and became World Champion in the Woman’s Division of the World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation World Tournaments in 1994.

For her contributions to the community, she became the Chair of the Greater Dallas Community Relations Commission, to improve race relations in greater Dallas. Ms. Velasco was given the “Mutya ng Texas” award for outstanding community leadership in 1998, and received the “Award for Outstanding Contributions in Culture and Arts” from the Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce in 2003. She is an elder of the Presbyterian Church, and currently serves as the worship leader for the Filipino Mabuhay Fellowship in Dallas.

In addition to her affiliation with the American Physical Therapy Association, the Texas Physical Therapy Association, and the Acupuncture Federation of America, Ms. Velasco is also a member of the Filipino Folk Arts Theatre, the Mabuhay Fellowship and the World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation.

Ms. Velasco has five children, fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In her spare time she enjoys music, literature, dance, choreography, poetry and travel.
