Jaguars LB Telvin Smith Motivates Hometown Youth on and Off the Field at 2nd Annual Free Game Changer Football & Cheer Camp in Valdosta
The NFL standout returned to give back to local youth in the community.
Valdosta, GA, July 05, 2017 --(PR.com)-- Telvin Smith, a Valdosta native and FSU alum, along with a few of his NFL colleagues, provided a fun filled day on the field for hundreds of youth ages 6-15 at his 2nd Annual free football and cheer camp at Lowndes High School in Valdosta.
Smith enlisted an all-star roster of local coaches, players and professional cheerleaders to assist him in his mission to give back to his community. The 300+ football campers enjoyed a full day of drills, agility training and mentoring. The Jacksonville Jaguar cheerleaders lent their support and taught cheer basics and a dance routine to 75 eager Game Changer cheer campers.
During the complimentary post camp BBQ luncheon for the campers, their families and invited guests, the cheer campers performed their routine to a hefty round of applause. Smith closed out the camp by handing out special hustle awards to both football and cheer campers who excelled throughout the day and exhibited good sportsmanship. Campers departed with huge smiles, autographs from the NFL players, camp t-shirt and a gift bag of goodies.
Smith has consistently been vocal about giving back to his community since the beginning of his NFL career. “I started here,” Smith said. “Many wouldn’t even believe it, but look where I am now. That’s what I try and preach to them. I just want the camp to be a gateway to inspire them in whatever they want to do, whether it’s football or something else.”
The outpouring of support for Smith’s commitment to his mission to support the youth in Valdosta was incredible. Participating NFL players included: Josh Harvey-Clemons (Redskins), Kenny Moore (Patriots), Kenneth Durden (Raiders) and Jay Rome (free agent). The cheer camp was led by the Jacksonville Roar’s Nijah, Kendall, Jada and Taylor.
The camp was sponsored in part by 107.9 the Beat, Woodstack BBQ Tavern, Hughston Clinic, Pepsi, Sam’s Club, Williams Hotel Group, Hot 102.7, Pirate Printing, Florida State University, Sunset Farm Foods, KT Tape, South Georgia Medical Center EMS, Reames Concrete Company, City of Valdosta, Lowndes High School, Red Clay Graphics, Flowers Bakery and South Georgia Pediatric Dentistry.
About Telvin Smith: While at Lowndes, Smith played football and ran track. As a junior he helped his team win the state AAAAA championship. He went on to attend Florida State University where he was named first-team All-ACC. The Jaguars drafted Smith in the 2014 NFL Draft, and he has begun to collect accolades early in his professional career, twice earning AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
