Metropolis, IL, February 16, 2008 --(PR.com)-- 2008 will mark the 30th year Metropolis, Illinois has held its annual Superman Celebration. The dates this year will be June 12th through the 15th. During the past 30 celebrations the crowds have grown to over 30,000 flocking to the only town in America that is officially known as the “Home of Superman.”
“Each year the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce works very hard to honor our favorite son, Superman,” stated Karla Ogle, Chairperson for the Superman Celebration. In cooperation with the Metropolis Area Tourism Commission and the City of Metropolis the four day festival caters to all things Superman. One of the highlights of the celebration is the Superman related celebrities that attend the celebration. “We always try to get a mix of celebrities that have had a part in each genre of Superman’s popularity. We try to get someone that has participated in the Superman Television era, the Motion Picture era and of course, the Comic era,” said Ogle. In the past few years the celebrity line-up has included characters from the wildly popular cable hit Smallville. “We are not at liberty to discuss who the celebrities will be at this year’s Celebration, but I will say that I guarantee everyone will be excited to meet all of them.” A press release is scheduled for early March announcing this year’s line-up.
Metropolis, Illinois is a town of 6500 at the very southern tip of Illinois on Interstate 24. Director of Tourism, Trish Steckenrider stated that the Superman Celebration is the official kick-off of the summer tourism season. “Because Metropolis is so centrally located for people traveling to summer destinations, such as Chicago, Atlanta, Nashville, and St. Louis, it is a great place for people to stop and explore. There is always someone getting their picture taken with our 15 foot bronze Superman Statue,” stated Steckenrider. The over 650 hotel rooms fill up fast during the celebration so it is suggested to make your reservation soon for this year.
Not only is 2008 the 30th Annual Superman Celebration, it is also the 70th Birthday for Superman. “We will be celebrating several monumental events during this year’s celebration,” says Ogle.
