Are Screens Disconnecting Your Family? Families Managing Media Brings Nationally Acclaimed Expert to Help Area Parents
Don't miss a life changing night on August 31 at 7:00 pm with nationally acclaimed speaker, author, psychologist and Fox News contributor, Tom Kersting, who will empower you to reconnect your family by exploring the mental and emotional effects of screens on kids' brains. You will leave with strategies to help your child thrive in the real world and feel equipped to raise leaders (vs. followers) who are able to balance screen habits and healthy relationships.
Charlotte, NC, August 09, 2017 --(PR.com)-- We see it everywhere: at parks, restaurants, and in our homes and cars - kids connected to handheld devices and disconnected from the world around them. According to recent research, the average 13-year-old spends over 8 hours a day, seven days a week on a screen. This has reduced family connection in many homes. Thankfully, there is a solution!
Families Managing Media, a Matthews, NC based non-profit organization dedicated to preventing and eliminating digital media addiction, is working to help parents deal with this problem. That's why they are convening RECONNECT 2017, their first annual event designed to offer area parents, teens, educators, counselors, youth leaders, medical practitioners and others ways to take control of mismanaged media consumption. The group, led by founder Melanie Hempe, believes families and today’s youth especially will benefit by putting into place healthy lifestyle patterns that replace screen addiction and promote learning how to thrive in the real world.
RECONNECT 2017 will feature keynote speaker Tom Kersting, nationally acclaimed speaker, psychologist, Fox News contributor and author of Disconnected: How To Reconnect Our Digitally Distracted Kids. When asked about the importance of the event, Kersting emphasizes, “Today’s devices are impacting our kids more than we we realize which is not only affecting them emotionally, psychologically and socially but it is also affecting the family system.”
Kersting looks forward to engaging both adults and teens as he explores hot topics including:
- Social media’s impact on self esteem
- Video game addiction
- How to raise leaders not followers in today’s digital world
Registration is now open for the August 31 event at Pease Auditorium on 1200 Pease Lane in Charlotte. Seats are limited and registration is required. Purchase tickets at reconnectevent.com
As a bonus offering, RECONNECT 2017 will also kick off the day with a Friends of Families Managing Media luncheon including Charlotte’s broadcast personality and Congressional nominee, Vince Coakley, as emcee. Tom Kersting will share, in depth, the key role adults play in a child’s digital media management and the importance of Families Managing Media’s mission in turning the tide of childhood screen addiction.
