MSU Mississauga Ltd. Supplies Access Hatches for Toronto’s Historic Water Treatment Plant

MSU Mississauga Ltd. proud to share an article about one of their recent projects that was published in Environmental Science & Engineering Magazine.

Mississauga, Canada, September 28, 2017 --(PR.com)-- The magazine article documents MSU Mississauga Ltd.’s contribution to the construction at the historic R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant in Toronto. MSU Mississauga Ltd. is honoured to have played a role in the rehabilitation of an important part of Toronto's infrastructure.

The R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant opened in 1941 and was built to combat a shortage of clean water for Toronto’s growing population. Today, the plant supplies 25% of Toronto’s clean water supply. The R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant is notable for its unique, Art Deco-inspired architectural design.

The plant has been expanded and upgraded over the past 80 years, and latest phase of construction began in 2015 to upgrade the building’s interior and exterior structures. MSU Mississauga Ltd. was selected by the City of Toronto as a preferred supplier to create new access hatches to cover the plant’s large settling basins.

MSU Mississauga Ltd. designed the new access hatches to meet strict requirements. The access hatches needed to be functional while preserving the building’s heritage structure. Some of the access hatches’ special features include gas struts to make the hatches easier to open, stainless steel, tamper-proof hardware, and locking armsto hold the hatches open at 90 degrees vertical. The hatches were also painted with NSF 61 compliant paint in a colour that matches the plant’s historical design. An NSF 61 compliant product prevents contaminants from leaching into the drinking water, which will ensure the water is safe for consumption.

The construction at the R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant is scheduled to be completed in summer 2018. The plant’s rehabilitation will ensure that Torontonians continue to have access to clean drinking water for decades to come. The preservation of the plant is also important because of its heritage status. Maintaining the plant will ensure that future generations can enjoy and appreciate the historic building’s incredible Art Deco design.
