Book Synopsis
Fifteen-year-old Yasu Sakamoto and her seventeen-year-old brother Haro, squabble over minor issues in life, like who wins the daily morning race to the bathroom in their tiny bungalow in Glenville, California. The bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 8, 1941, forces them into a new reality: the battle to survive as Japanese Americans during World War II. Hours after President Roosevelt declares war on Japan, two G-men search the Sakamoto’s house and take their father into custody. In the weeks that follow, their family store is vandalized, and anti-Japanese racism runs rampant through the hallways of Jackson High School. Anger and fear flow through the neighborhood. In the weeks that follow, evacuation rumors spread rapidly. President Roosevelt’s signature on Executive Order 9066 forces residents of Japanese ancestry to leave their homes. Imprisoned behind barbwire, Yasu and Haro’s hopes and dreams unravel quickly and their young lives are forever changed.
