Southwest League of Professional Baseball and Waco BlueCats Announce Professional Baseball Combine November 4, 2017
Pro baseball open tryout featuring Major League scouts and independent league scouts to evaluate prospective professional baseball players in Waco, Texas.
Waco, TX, September 13, 2017 --(PR.com)-- The Southwest League of Professional Baseball (SWL) and the Waco BlueCats recently announced they will be hosting the first Southwest Professional Baseball Combine. The combine is an open tryout for baseball players looking to be evaluated by Major League scouts and independent minor league baseball scouts. It will take place at the RiverBend Sports Complex (1001 Lake Shore Drive, Waco, TX 76708) on November 4, 2017, with registration beginning at 8:00am. In addition to the Scouts, Stan Hough and Bump Wills, both named field managers for SWL teams in 2019, will be coordinating the Combine.
On Saturday, November 4, players will have their skills evaluated by the scouts in attendance. At the conclusion of Saturday’s evaluation, there will be “cuts” and invitations to inter-squad games will be given to selected players for the next day, November 5. There is a $100 fee for players signing up during the pre-registration period (until October 1, 2017); and a $175 fee will be charged if players sign up after the registration period or the day of the Combine.
Karen Lucchesi, Vice President of Ventura Sports Group and the SWL, said, “We are excited to be bringing professional baseball to Waco, Royse City and other upcoming SWL markets. The Combine will be our first public event; and it will feature Stan Hough, Bump Wills and others involved in the league to evaluate prospective players who wish to play professional baseball at both the affiliated and independent minor league levels.”
Lucchesi continued, “Ventura Sports Group is excited to be bringing the concept of a true multi-purpose entertainment venue to these cities, giving the cities many ways to bring their communities together. The stadiums will host professional and amateur baseball, soccer games, have a built-in concert stage, kid-friendly zones in the stadiums during events, and opportunities for family-friendly outings year-round.” She emphasized, “Field suites, upper level suites, and stadium club opportunities will give entertainment and meeting space options for both individuals and businesses in each local market. Retail space at each stadium is another exciting component to offer options for people in each local market as well.”
Stan Hough has a long history of coaching and managing in professional baseball. He began his coaching career as a player/coach in the Houston Astros organization, and his first manager position was with the Texas Rangers organization. Hough also managed and coached in the New York Yankees, Montreal Expos and Baltimore Orioles organizations. Stan was the hitting coach in 2005 when the Fort Worth Cats won the Central Baseball League championship, and he managed the team two more titles in 2006-2007 when the Cats moved to the American Association of Professional Independent Baseball.
Bump Wills played second base for the Rangers from 1977-81 and also for the Chicago Cubs in 1982. He batted .266 for his major league career with 302 runs batted in and 196 stolen bases. He’s the son of record-setting base stealer Maury Wills, who played for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Waco BlueCats are an independent professional baseball team scheduled to begin play when the SWL's first season starts in 2019. Stan Hough will the team's field manager.
