Law Student Whose Father Was Diagnosed with Blood Cancer Receives 2017 Leukemia & Lymphoma Awareness Scholarship from the Law Office of Renkin & Associates
Encinitas-based Law Office Supports Blood Cancer Awareness Month, Assists Law Students with Financial Support.
Encinitas, CA, October 16, 2017 --(PR.com)-- The Law Office of Renkin & Associates has selected Mary as the recipient of their annual Leukemia & Lymphoma Awareness/Law School Scholarship.
Mary is a second year law student whose life changed when her father was diagnosed with blood cancer. “In 2011, my father was diagnosed. After his diagnosis, he had to on Social Security disability payments. Because of this, he simply couldn’t contribute to my educational expenses,” she shared.
Despite the hardship her family has endured, Mary displayed an incredible level of commitment to her education. As an undergraduate, she made the Dean’s list throughout her entire tenure -- graduating with a GPA of 3.9. She was honored with the distinction of serving as an American Delegate for Stanford’s U.S.-Russia Forum, a competitive program comprised of both Russian and American college students who collaborate on the complications within Russia-US geopolitical issues.
"No one is ready or prepared when a loved one is diagnosed with cancer. Community initiatives such as this scholarship from Renkin & Associates are twofold: they raise awareness while providing direct relief when you are in the midst of a medical crisis,” she said. “Speaking on behalf of myself and my family: we are extremely grateful for organizations who support families affected by blood cancers, unseen diseases which afflict so many of us."
2017 marks the third year this scholarship has been awarded. Richard Renkin was inspired to create this scholarship when, in 2013, he joined the staggering statistics of those diagnosed with blood cancer. Richard shared that someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer every three minutes and statistics from the California Cancer Registry indicate that 13,000 new cases of Leukemia and Lymphoma are diagnosed in California every year.
The annual Leukemia & Lymphoma Awareness/Law School Scholarship is open to current or incoming law students who have been impacted by a blood cancer (either personally or through a family member). This $1,000 scholarship can be used for tuition or books. The firm also supports Blood Cancer Awareness Month -- a time during which organizations work to raise awareness about blood cancers and drive research toward finding new treatments and cures.
