Penguin Chick Explores Antarctic in Search for Her Father in New Children’s Book
Dog Ear Publishing reviews a new illustrated children’s book that features a penguin searching for her father.
Kirkland, WA, November 15, 2017 --(PR.com)-- Imagine what might happen if a penguin chick got separated from her father in the Antarctic before she was born. A new book that charmingly describes that scenario has been released by Dog Ear Publishing.
When an emperor penguin chick begins moving around in her egg, the unthinkable happens – the egg rolls down a huge hill away from her father. When she pops out of her egg shortly afterward, he’s nowhere to be found, so the chick sets off on a quest to find him.
Her travels include sliding down hills, waddling across frozen bridges, and talking to other creatures that inhabit the Antarctic. But the albatross, elephant seal and orca are not her father. When something comes out of the sea, she thinks it might be him, but no father would make noises like that. Can the little chick ever find the way back to where she belongs?
“Are You My Dad?” and its gentle story of determination and love of a chick for her father works well for reading aloud to children. Its illustrations have plenty of personality and showcase the variety of animals that live together in the Antarctic.
The book is earning positive reviews. “Werner’s soft lines balance approachability with animal accuracy perfectly for the age group, and Kelley’s gentle telling is sure to require rereads. A delightful addition to the ‘are you my’ category,” writes Kirkus Reviews. Foreward Clarion Reviews notes that the book is “a lovely introduction to the creatures of the Antarctic.”
“Are You My Dad?” also has earned the Dog Ear Publishing Award of Literary Excellence. Award winners are determined by the company’s editorial team. The managing editor, editorial services manager and the publisher review its recommendations. Winning books include the award logo on their covers.
Author Leslie Kelley is a graphic designer and color consultant. She enjoys browsing through books in the children’s section of a King County library near Seattle, boating with her family and writing, designing or playing with color. “Are You My Dad?” is her first published children’s book.
Illustrator Kirk Werner, a published children’s author himself, is a lifelong Washington state resident. He is passionate about drawing and creates visual art as an illustrator and graphic designer.
