Man Finds Way to ‘Donate His Weight’ to Food Banks

Man loses 230 lbs of weight to gain tremendous amounts of food and money donations for food banks across the country

Allentown, PA, February 25, 2008 --(PR.com)-- When Ben Miller decided the New Year was a perfect opportunity to start his new weight-loss plan, he came up with a revolutionary idea- why not just give the weight away? There would still be the matter of a healthy diet and exercise program, but rather than only working for himself, Ben found a way to use his less-than-unique situation to benefit others.

Ben decided to donate one pound of food to a local food bank for every pound of weight he lost (His goal is to lose 230 pounds). Ben’s wife, Andrea, expanded on the idea by suggesting that Ben get family, friends and businesses to sponsor his weight loss. A fully-interactive website was created, www.donatemyweight.com, to allow people to learn more about Ben, donate to the food bank and for businesses to sponsor Ben’s weight loss.

Sponsorships involve pledging to donate a certain amount of food and/or money to the food bank, for every one pound of weight Ben loses. 100% of all food and money donated will go directly to the food bank. Individuals and businesses outside of Ben’s local area are encouraged to donate to a food bank in their local community. To date, $18 and 191 pounds of food have been pledged, for every pound Ben loses (A total of $4140.00 and 43,930 pounds of food).

Within days of the website being made public, Ben’s story was broadcast all around America, via various national media outlets. Donations and sponsorships began coming in from across the country and in less than a month, Ben received a sponsorship for 40,000 pounds of food (20 tons) from Wegmans grocery store.

As Ben noted on the front page of www.DonateMyWeight.com, “It's all about making lemons out of lemonade, finding opportunity inside one of the biggest struggles of my life.” Losing weight can be extremely challenging and it’s something nearly everyone has tried to do at one point in their life.

The Donate My Weight project is a chance for people to help those less fortunate, encourage someone who is literally in a fight for his life and quite possibly, find some new motivation for their own weight battle. At the end of the day, the true goal is for everybody to win.

(Ben Miller is 32 years old, married with two stepchildren, a disabled veteran of Naval Intelligence and a morbidly obese man with over 200 pounds to lose.)
