Bettie’s manipulated Polaroid collections are created by photographing each subject with a Polaroid SX-70 camera (remember those?) and hand-manipulating the image as it develops, creating the very “painterly” quality for which she is best known. “I use a camera like a painter uses a brush and paint” says Bettie. I see the image ... as it will be ... through the lens of the camera. To do this style of art, which is actually ‘de-constructive art’ you have to actually be willing to destroy the image in a creative way.”
