Renowned Artist Makoto Fujimura to Speak at the John Jay Institute and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center
Colorado Springs, CO, March 07, 2008 --(PR.com)-- World-renowned artist Makoto Fujimura will lecture at the John Jay Institute as part of their series “Cities of God: a neo-traditional vision for building good cities and towns.”
Mr. Fujimura is a member of the prestigious National Council for the Arts and is founder of the International Arts Movement. Trained both in the U.S. and the acclaimed Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, he was the first outsider to be invited to study in the Japanese Painting Doctorate program as well as the youngest artist ever to have a piece acquired by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo. He is also the author of the new book, River Grace. Mr. Fujimura’s lecture will explore the artist’s attempt to integrate earthy, bodily humanity with communal urban constructs—Nature in the City.
When considering the idea of the creative age and the irony of establishing the International Arts Movement at ground zero in New York City, Makoto said “We have to reconsider the artists’ role in society, in our education of our children: and we need to redefine how we see ourselves, all of us, as creative human beings who need art in our lives so that we can preserve a child’s innocence in the midst of horror and unspeakable evil, and help them to prosper and thrive in the creative age.”
The lecture will begin at 7pm in the Theatre at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, 30 West Dale Street, Colorado Springs. The public is invited to attend the lecture and the reception to follow, but seating is limited. They are urged to RSVP to the event, rsvp@johnjayinstitute.org.
Named for the American founder, the John Jay Institute is a para-academic center dedicated to the development of principled leaders for the future of American public life. Headquartered in Colorado Springs, the Institute runs an academic fellowship for rising law, government, and divinity students with field placements in Washington, D.C., various state capitals, and international political centers around the world.
