College Graduates Converge on Marlborough to Seek Employment
Marlborough job fair attracts recent graduates looking to work at local companies
Marlborough, MA, May 24, 2018 --(PR.com)-- Graduating students from Worcester Polytechnic University (WPI), Framingham State University (FSU), UMass Lowell, UMass Amherst, Clark University and other regional colleges converged on Marlborough yesterday to meet with hiring managers and apply for jobs at local technology and life sciences companies.
Alumni from the city’s Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School and Marlborough High School were also among close to 50 recent graduates who attended the Marlborough Works! Job Fair, held at the Courtyard by Marriott. About half of all graduating students taking part in the job fair were Marlborough residents. In total, about 150 jobseekers vowed for more than 300 jobs on offer at the event, which was organized by the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) as part of Mayor Arthur Vigeant’s ongoing efforts to increase local employment.
The job fair hosted about two dozen local companies, including Boston Scientific, which recently made the Forbes list of the country’s top 100 companies to work for. Hiring representatives from GE Healthcare Life Sciences, Quest Diagnostics, The Dow Chemical Company, Holographix, IPG Photonics, Atlas Travel & Technology Group, Allegro Microsystems and other Marlborough-based companies from a variety of industries were also in attendance.
For the first time in the job fair’s seven-year run, recent college and high school graduates got priority access to the event, benefitting from an extra half an hour of face-to-face time with employers. MEDC executive director, Meredith Harris said it was important to connect local life sciences, technology and other companies with the future generation of innovators.
“Technology is changing daily, and employers need people who can understand and keep up with the latest innovations and breakthroughs,” said MEDC executive director, Meredith Harris. “Graduating college students have the most up-to-date technological training, which makes them very valuable to employers who are looking to be leaders and disruptors in their fields. That’s why, this year, we set out to create a forum for our local employers and our regional student population to meet and, hopefully, forge long-term relationships.”
Marlborough’s centralized location gives employers access to over a dozen post-secondary institutions, including WPI and FSU, within a 20-minute drive. The city is also located within a 40-minute drive from major leading higher education institutions, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Boston College and Boston University.
“Marlborough is located at the heart of a thriving technology and innovation corridor,” said Mayor Arthur Vigeant. “That’s one of the many reasons why companies choose to move here and create jobs, and why initiatives like the Marlborough Works! Job Fair are important for the local economy. Through the job fair, we connect local employers with the regional talent pool and local residents with employment opportunities right in their back yards.”
More than 100 companies have moved to or expanded in Marlborough over the past 6 years, adding close to 7,000 jobs to the local labor market. The unemployment rate has fallen by more than 35% over the same time period and, according to the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, it currently sits at 3.5%, as of March 2018. Marlborough’s labor force has grown by 2% and the number of people employed has risen by nearly 5% since 2012.
