Collegecoin Launches on Stellar to Help Students Graduate Debt-Free

An exciting new "blockchain for impact" project aims to battle student debt by leveraging the Stellar network.

San Juan, PR, July 03, 2018 --(PR.com)-- Collegecoin is a new “blockchain for good” project on a mission to help college students graduate debt-free and increase education around the world. To accomplish that mission, Collegecoin is building a suite of applications powered by the Stellar network, including College Wallet. College Wallet is an easy-to-use mobile app that gives students and their families a powerful tool to raise money for college. Students can request and receive money in minutes and have access to a large inventory of blockchain-based financial aid awards. Parents can contribute into smart-contract powered educational savings accounts (ESAs).

The organization recently participated in #RestartWeek West, a week-long series of events on the west coast of Puerto Rico. Collegecoin was a major sponsor of the EduBlock Hackathon at the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez (UPRM), a student-organized hackathon based on a “Social Impact and Empowerment” theme. The two-day hackathon was open to Puerto Rico college students and even included one high school participant. BBC was present throughout the event, and Brock Pierce attended the judging. Other sponsors included ConsenSys, DNA Fund, Transform Group, Link Puerto Rico, and a handful of other companies establishing an early footprint in the emerging Puerto Rico blockchain community.

The Collegecoin (COLL) token launched on the Stellar Decentralized Exchange (SDEX) last week. The Stellar network is a distributed blockchain based ledger and database that facilitates cross-asset transfers of value, including payments. The native digital asset of Stellar is called Lumens (XLM). Stellar makes it easy to develop financial applications and infrastructure that support both government-issued “fiat” currencies and cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Stellar’s own Lumens (XLM).

Collegecoin also participated in the inaugural Blockchain for Impact conference sponsored by the United Nations in New York. The event invites visionary industry stakeholders representing the full breadth of the blockchain ecosystem into a robust, future-based, multi-track global conversation about social innovation, fair and consistent public policy and responsible guidelines for industry governance. The one-day event was hosted at UN headquarters and ended with a chartered cruise around Manhattan.
