Dechert LLP Partner, Barton J. Winokur, Elected to Posse Board
New York, NY, August 23, 2018 --(PR.com)-- The Posse Foundation has welcomed Barton J. Winokur as a member of its Board of Directors.
Winokur and his wife, Susan, have been generous supporters of Posse. Winokur is a trustee and former Chairman of the Board at Brandeis University, which has been a Posse partner since 1997. He is also a major supporter of the Posse program at his alma mater, Cornell University, where he currently chairs the Board of Trustees Executive Committee and formerly served as Vice Chair of the Board. Cornell University will welcome its sixth cohort of Posse Scholars from Chicago this fall. In 2016, the Winokurs were honored with the Posse Star award, recognizing their leadership and significant contributions in the field of education.
Barton J. Winokur, who joined Dechert in 1965, has been a corporate partner for more than forty years and is the Immediate Past Chairman of the firm. Throughout his career, he has served as chair of Dechert’s mergers and acquisitions and international law groups, and was the resident partner of the London office from 1975 to 1979.
Winokur has devoted his practice to the representation of large public and private companies, global leveraged buyout funds, and venture capital firms in complex corporate transactions, such as mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, restructurings and securities matters. Prior to returning to his legal practice full time, Winokur served 15 years as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Dechert from 1996 to 2011. During his tenure, the firm nearly doubled its headcount, significantly expanded its global footprint with the opening of multiple offices worldwide, expanded its pro bono program and became one of the most profitable law firms in the country.
Winokur’s accomplishments as a leader have been duly noted, having been recognized by The Lawyer as one of the 10 most influential lawyers of the next decade who are likely to lead firms’ thinking and shape the future of the transatlantic elite. In 2013, The American Lawyer presented Winokur with the Law Firm Leader award at their 10th annual Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Posse extends to these students the opportunity to pursue personal and academic excellence by placing them in supportive, multicultural teams—Posses—of 10 students. Posse Scholars graduate at a rate of 90 percent and make a visible difference on campus and throughout their professional careers.
