2018 EnergySec Security Award Recipients Announced
EnergySec honored two individuals at the 14th Annual Security and Compliance Summit held at the Disneyland Resort Hotel: Stephen Brown as EnergySec’s Cybersecurity Leader of the Year 2018 and Monta Elkins as EnergySec’s Cybersecurity Professional of the Year 2018.
Anaheim, CA, August 31, 2018 --(PR.com)-- Today, EnergySec honored two individuals at the 14th Annual Security and Compliance Summit held at the Disneyland Resort Hotel: Stephen Brown as EnergySec’s Cybersecurity Leader of the Year 2018 and Monta Elkins as EnergySec’s Cybersecurity Professional of the Year 2018.
Each year, EnergySec gives special recognition to individuals who have stood out among their peers in displaying EnergySec’s core values of service, innovation, and excellence. Selected by EnergySec staff from nominations submitted by industry, these individuals are recognized as examples to our community and an encouragement to others.
Mr. Brown is the Vice President, Enterprise Security Services and Chief Security Officer of Xcel Energy. He is responsible for all aspects of the company’s Cyber Security, Physical Security, Enterprise Continuity, Strategy Performance, and Security Governance & Risk Programs.
A seasoned information security executive, Steve has over 35 years of industry and military experience in the field of security. Prior to Xcel Energy, he was the Vice President & Deputy CISO at Hewlett Packard, responsible for global security operations. He spent 13 years with Wells Fargo as the Senior Vice President of Information Management and Enterprise Information Security Operations. He started his career in the US Navy, where he spent 20 years in technical and leadership positions in Information Warfare, Signals Intelligence and Network Operations.
Steve currently is on the Board of Directors of the Global Resilience Federation and Midwest Reliability Organization Security Advisory Council. He previously sat on the Board of Directors for Information Technology Information Sharing Analysis Center (IT-ISAC), the Board of Directors of the Financial Services ISAC (FS-ISAC), and as the co-chair of the Minnesota CSO Summit. Steve has a Bachelor of Science in Information Management from the University of Maryland and an Executive MBA from the University of Michigan.
Monta Elkins is currently "Hacker-in-Chief" for FoxGuard Solutions, an ICS patch provider. A security researcher and consultant, he was formerly Security Architect for Rackspace and the first ISO for Radford University. He has been a speaker at DEFCON, Homeland Security's ICSJWG (Industrial Control Systems Joint Working Group), EnergySec's Security Summit, VASCAN, GE Digital Energy's Annual Software Summit, Educause Security Professionals Conference, Toshiba's Industrial Control Systems Conference, NERC's GridSecCon, ICS CyberSecurity by Security Week, UTC Telecom, and other security conferences.
Monta is the author of hands-on, hacker tools and techniques classes and a SANS Instructor. He is also a guest lecturer for Virginia Tech and teaches rapid prototyping and Arduino classes with Let's Code Blacksburg.
