Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles Partner with Los Angeles Chargers to Enhance Facilities & Programming
Chargers’ corporate partner Bob’s Discount Furniture to join in renovations at BGCMLA Watts/Willowbrook and Challengers Clubhouses.
Los Angeles, CA, September 06, 2018 --(PR.com)-- As part of a multi-year partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Chargers are providing a capital investment to improve and enhance existing athletic fields and establish innovative new teen centers at the Watts/Willowbrook and Challengers Clubhouses, while also providing educational enrichment programming. Joining the Chargers in the establishment of the teen centers is Bob’s Discount Furniture, who will be outfitting the facilities with new furniture.
“We are thrilled and honored to work with the Los Angeles Chargers and to be part of an exciting, community building partnership that supports the development of our next generation of leaders,” BGCMLA CEO Calvin Lyons said. “Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro LA would like to extend our deepest thank you to the Chargers for their financial investment and for leveraging their contacts to extend our outreach to youth and families - Thank you!”
The Chargers’ multi-pronged approach with this investment ensures that youth in some of the most consistently under-resourced neighborhoods in South Los Angeles will have access to safe, fun and educational gathering places – both after school and during the summer – where they can build the knowledge, skills and behaviors to put them on the path for success.
“Youth health and fitness are key community initiatives for the Chargers. This partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles is an example of corporate and community organizations working together to provide a safe environment for kids to exercise and play outdoors,” said Dean Spanos, Chargers Controlling Owner and Chairman of the Board. “The Chargers and my family are committed to building healthy communities and supporting local youth to reach their full potential by helping under-resourced neighborhoods grow stronger and safer.”
BGCMLA and the Chargers are working together to reverse the most negative trends facing our youth:
· 1-in-4 children live in poverty
· 1-in-4 students will drop out of high school
· Only half of all youth are in what is considered to be a healthy weight zone
A multi-year effort, the Chargers’ $400,000 investment will be applied in two phases. Initial facility refurbishment and repair – phase one – will provide the foundation necessary to sustain BGCMLA programming for years to come. These facility enhancements will strengthen BGCMLA’s ability to provide quality programs across their three priority outcomes: Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles. Phase two will seek to bolster the club’s educational enrichment programming and create even more opportunity for youth in these underserved communities to lead safe, productive and healthy lives.
About the Los Angeles Chargers
For 58 seasons, the Chargers have led the fight to stretch the imagination and give fans the most exciting show in football. Behind the dramatic games, unforgettable highlights, beloved players, groundbreaking performances and one of the best uniforms in the NFL lies an uncompromising drive for success – one rooted in toughness, resilience and old-fashioned hard work. A charter member of the American Football League, the franchise was established in Los Angeles in 1960 and called the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum home during its first year of existence. From 1961 to 2016, the team played in San Diego. Advancing to five of the first six AFL Championship games ever played, the Chargers claimed the 1963 title and later joined the National Football League when the two leagues merged in 1970. Since the merger, the Chargers have gone on to appear in Super Bowl XXIX and have captured an additional 10 division titles. The Chargers were purchased by construction leader and real estate developer Alex G. Spanos in 1984 and have been under the guidance of Spanos’ eldest son Dean, the team’s current Chairman of the Board, since 1994. Dean Spanos’ sons – A.G. Spanos, President of Business Operations, and John Spanos, President of Football Operations – oversee the day-to-day operations of the franchise. The Chargers returned to Los Angeles in 2017 and will play all home games at StubHub Center while the new L.A. Stadium and Entertainment District at Hollywood Park is constructed.
