10th Anniversary Richmond Autism Speaks Walk Will Raise Funds for the Autism Community

Richmond, VA, September 20, 2018 --(PR.com)-- The National Capital Area chapter of Autism Speaks will hold its 2018 Richmond Autism Speaks Walk event on Saturday, September 29 at Innsbrook Pavilion. Proceeds from the Richmond Autism Speaks Walk will support Autism Speaks’ mission to promote solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the life span, for the needs of people with autism and their families.
Autism Speaks Walk is the world’s largest fundraising event to enhance the lives of people with autism today and accelerate a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow. The events are powered by the love of parents, grandparents, children, siblings, friends, relatives, and support providers for the special people in their lives living with autism. Funds raised help fuel innovative research and make connections to critical lifelong supports and services.
The Richmond Walk will feature a 2.5 mile walk from Innsbrook Pavilion, local service provider sponsors sharing educational resources, a sensory-friendly program, Quiet Tent, and child-friendly activities.
The Hughes Center is this year’s Presenting Sponsor of the Richmond Autism Speaks Walk. Other local sponsors include: Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority, Magellan Complete Care of Virginia, Next Steps Behavioral Centers, Outsiderz Working Rigs Association, Behavioral Health Services of Virginia, BreakThru Autism Services LLC, Centra Health Autism Services, Charterhouse School, Dominion ABA, Grafton Integrated Health Network, Recognizing Children’s Gifts Behavioral Health Network, Science Museum of Virginia, Todd Ratner PLC, WRIC ABC 8, Entercom, and Wegmans. The Innsbrook Foundation is the venue partner of this year’s Richmond Walk.
In recent years, Autism Speaks has made a significant impact in the Richmond area. Through its Local Grants Program, Autism Speaks has provided funding to innovative local service providers, including: Latin Ballet of Virginia, YMCA of Greater Richmond, Northstar Academy, Danville Science Center, and Little Fish Swimming. Autism Speaks also recently awarded a Research Grant to a student at Virginia Commonwealth University for $64,000 to fund her research on “Individual, Family, and Peer Factors and the Mental Health of Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder.”
Alpha Xi Delta proudly serves as the North American sponsor of Autism Speaks Walk. Since 2009, Alpha Xi Delta has raised more than $8 million dollars for Autism Speaks, and they currently participate at Autism Speaks Walk events nationwide. Alpha Xi Delta’s work not only generates vital funds for autism research, but also raises awareness for autism. With over 175,000 initiated members and 130 chapters across the country, the visibility, planning, and energy that Alpha Xi Delta brings to the walks are an enormous part of their overall success. The Alpha Xi Delta chapter at Virginia Commonwealth University will be volunteering at this year’s Walk, with more than 70 women in attendance.
