Eugene, OR, October 15, 2018 --(PR.com)-- The Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG), a nonprofit membership organization representing artists, designers, jewelers and metalsmiths, is conducting a “Membership Month” promotion between October 15 and November 30, 2018. The goal of “Membership Month” is to encourage former members to re-join, invite students studying metalsmithing to join, and to encourage current members to invite their non-member colleagues to join. Part of the mission is to broaden understanding of SNAG’s mission and the benefits of membership.
“The most frequent question we get asked is, ‘Do I have to be a goldsmith to join?’,” says SNAG executive director Gwynne Rukenbrod Smith, herself a silversmith and glass artist. “Actually, the founders of SNAG included ‘goldsmiths’ in the name to honor the venerated tradition of craftsmanship that it implies,” she says. “In fact, SNAG embraces artisans, educators, craftspersons and students working in all metals, multiple alternative materials, and in different sizes and scale -- our membership includes all types of jewelers, designers, collectors, educators, students, and metalsmiths.”
SNAG facilitates and sponsors a variety of programs, events, publications and scholarships to to advance jewelry and metalsmithing while inspiring creativity, encouraging education, and fostering community. The organization publishes both Metalsmith and Metalsmith Tech magazines, whose coverage spans contemporary makers, artists in their studios, edgy work, production jewelry, fashion, hollowware, furniture, collectors’ collections, and more. The mission of the publications is to explore, analyze, promote and document excellence and innovation in the field of jewelry and metalsmithing.
SNAG also hosts an annual conference that focuses on materials, art, design, and interdisciplinary collaboration, while celebrating traditional and innovative techniques. The 2019 conference in Chicago, will be the 48th annual conference and will mark the organization’s 50th anniversary.
“Art is more important than ever in today’s world,” says Rukenbrod Smith. “Membership is the heart of our organization and, while we do receive some support in the form of donations, we simply couldn’t exist or provide the programs that we do without our members. So, for the next six weeks we’re asking our members to encourage their colleagues to join, and we’re inviting expired members to re-join.”
Those who join or rejoin between October 15 and November 30 will be entered into a drawing and could win a free conference registration waiver (worth up to $525) or other goodies. Students can join in groups of four for the cost of three.
