New Suspense Novel Seeks to Unearth One Man’s Buried Past

Boston, MA, March 18, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The Last Deer Hunt: A Yooper Mystery is a romantic suspense novel that begins on a chilly autumn day on Michigan’s untamed Upper Peninsula. Though it has been five years since the painful death of his young wife, Hank Duval is trying to allow love once more into his life. But personal considerations are put on hold when a decades-old body is found under the floor of the old mill. Faced with uncovering the truth of his past, Duval must bring together his old school buddies for one last deer hunt.

Though cabinetmaker Hank Duval has a deep love for the wilderness and hometown life, he is torn by his affection for his wife’s best friend, Maggie, and the plans she would like to make for their future. Maggie is a Los Angeles diehard, who would love nothing more than to have Hank follow her back to California to pursue a career in art. But life in Fairhaven Township is about to irrevocably change for Duval and Maggie, as all eyes become focused on a group of men whose past will no longer stay buried.

Weariness was pressing down on him. Damn, I forgot all about the body. Yeah, It came back to me in the river, what the guys and I did up at that house that night. That has to be the same body, the body from my dreams. As Hank played that night over in his mind, he realized that there were large gaps missing. He tried desperately to lift the last veil of fog from the memory of that night long ago but the details lay hidden somewhere back in the recesses of his mind.

He looked up to see Gus watching him intently. ‘Yeah, I did hear about it. I stopped at Frenchy’s this morning.’ The fatigue was making him feel vulnerable, ‘The diner was full, and everybody was talking about the murder’
‘Somebody said it was murder?” Gus asked, peering intently at Hank….”

Having created a disquieting atmosphere that pervades the story, author Jerry Sarasin takes readers on a journey that delves into the human psyche to shed light on how we come to perceive the past, what is real in our memories, and what vital pieces of our life’s puzzle are submerged within the subconscious. Ultimately, The Last Deer Hunt is about the circumstances that define us, and the shared experiences of youth that can form the deepest and, sometimes, most dangerous of bonds.

After a successful career in the computer field, Jerry Sarasin returned to school, received a master’s degree in psychology, and then worked for many years as a social worker. Sarasin is a genuine “Yooper,” born and raised in the Upper Peninsula, or U.P., of Michigan. His greatest love now, he says, is to create, whether on canvas, in clay, or with words.

In this, his first novel, Sarasin reaches back to his roots in the U.P. “The Keweenaw Peninsula, in particular,” Sarasin says, “has one of the harshest climates in the U.S., where it is said, there are two seasons: winter and the fourth of July. It is also blessed with a bounty of rugged and natural beauty and the most genuinely warm people found anywhere. So in many respects, this novel is like going home.”

Sarasin now resides with his wife, Carol, in Massachusetts, where he is working on his next novel. His previous work was 95 Octobers Come and Gone, a biography of his father, which was printed in 2004.
