Lambda Foundation Pittsburgh PA Announces 2008 First Cycle Grant Recipients
Pittsburgh, PA, March 19, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The Lambda Foundation exists to foster for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People- educational, social, cultural, health and artistic projects and programs in the Greater Pittsburgh area through Grants and Scholarships to Organizations and Individuals.
The Lambda Foundation was incorporated in 1983. The first grants were awarded in 1984. Over the past 25 years the Foundation has awarded nearly $800,000 back to the community.
These grants were made possible by the participation of their individual contributors, their Annual Ball participants, their corporate sponsors, UPMC, Macy’s, and their special contributors Kirk Johnson and Henry Kravovsky.
The Lambda Foundation would like to thank the following organizations for the opportunity to co-participate in such worthy projects.
Dreams of Hope $3000.00
Dreams of Hope develop leaders within the LGBT youth community and promote awareness and understanding through the creative and performing arts. Funding will support their 2007-2008 Season titled “Out At Work, Out At School”.
The Open Door, Inc. $2500.00
The Open Door, Inc. whose mission is to provide a supportive housing program that improves the health of the forgotten population of high risk, chronically homeless people living with HIV/AIDS. Funds will be used for their operating budget.
Shepherd Wellness Community $2000.00
Shepherd Wellness Community offers a program of support and assistance to people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Funds will be used for renovation and equipment.
New Voices Pittsburgh $2000.00
Funds will be used to host three educational and networking events to be held between PrideFest and Black Gay Pride 2008. The proposed activities include; (1) mini-training in conjunction with Causes in Common campaign to educate women of color and their allies on the connection between the LGBTQ Liberation and Reproductive Justice Movements; (2) resource fair, presentation and forum on reproductive/health on the concerns of queer women of color; and (3) networking reception, panel and screening of “black womyn: conversations with lesbians of african descent”- a documentary by tiona m.;
Twisted Runway $1500.00
Funds are to be used to create a HIV/AIDS Valentines Day Dance Ball. The Valentines Day event will encourage the African American Gay Community to come to an event surrounded by safe sex information. Twisted Runway uses fashion as a vehicle to encourage people to come together to get education on safe sex in an artistic way. ”Fashion is way of expression through the body. A cat-walk is the heartbeat of the world.”
Pittsburgh Gay & Lesbian Film Society $1200.00
Pittsburgh Gay & Lesbian Film Society advances LGBT culture and creativity through film. Funds are for operational support and the 23rd Annual Pittsburgh International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival.
Pittsburgh Aids Task Force $1000.00
To support operating costs for PATF, whose mission is to save, sustain, and empower the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS and to prevent the spread of infection.
Persad Center, Inc. $1000.00
Persad, founded in 1972, is the nation’s second oldest licensed mental health counseling center specifically created to meet the needs of the GLBT community. Funds to be used for the 2008 Healing Weekend.
