Rock Hill School District Held a Successful "Roving Chef" Event, Teaching Students How to Cook with a Real Chef
Rock Hill, SC, November 14, 2018 --(PR.com)-- Students at India Hook Elementary had a fun time learning about food safety, foundational cooking techniques, even cooking with a real Chef. Southwest Foodservice Excellence (SFE), Rock Hill’s K-12 foodservice provider, holds events like these with all of its partners. It is a part of their food service offering.
Students toured the school’s kitchen, learning about the importance of food safety, washing procedures and temperature control when cooking - and even paid a visit to the walk-in freezer. “This is an event that students are likely to remember throughout their lives,” says Jason Bass, Director of Business Development for SFE.
Rock Hill District Chef Andres Romero led the instruction that day, highlighting healthy ingredients that make food flavorful. In addition, Chef Romero took this time to obtain feedback from the students on their thoughts about the current food program. “We ask the students what they would like to see on the menu. Their feedback helps us to keep our school menus fresh and exciting every day,” said Chef Romero.
After a commemorating class photo, each child left the “Roving Chef” event with a certificate, chef hat and recipe card to take home. Chef Romero added, “Often, the students who join me in “Roving Chef” events want to recreate the recipes with their parents at home.”
“Roving Chef” events are just one way that SFE encourages students to make healthier eating choices at school and at home. This signature program is designed to be fun and interactive, giving each child a chance to learn more about how to cook healthy foods that also taste delicious. “Administrators should demand events like these in their school nutrition programs,” says Jason Bass.
SFE was established in 2004 as a limited liability company in Arizona. The company partners with over 100 school districts in the U.S. to provide food that is 75 percent made-from-scratch, and it only serves the K-12 segment. The company is expanding through the southeast.
