Sawyer County Housing Authority Brings Renewable Energy to Rural Development Housing

Hayward, WI, November 22, 2018 --(PR.com)-- In an initiative to reduce the future electric bills for rural development communities in, and around, Hayward, WI, Sawyer County Housing Authority (SCHA) partnered with Carlson Electric to install a total of 52 renewable energy rooftop mounted solar systems.

Sheila Young, Executive Director of SCHA, made a statement about the partnership, “In June, 2018, some of our staff met with Tim Dilley and Dave Carlson of Carlson Electric to learn about solar energy. Tim, Dave, and Kristen met with our board of commissioners and staff several times and were able to put a project together to convert 52 of our family and senior apartments to solar. Both Tim and Dave went beyond our expectations by finding financing and grants that would keep our costs down. We are excited to see the project take shape and look forward to seeing the savings in utility bills as well as the reduction in our carbon emissions. We are extremely grateful for all of the work that Tim and the Carlson Electric Team did to put this project together.”

The solar energy project with SCHA and Carlson Electric is expected to offset over 90 percent of the SCHA’s annual electric use and is expected to produce around 190,000 kWh per year. The 52 renewable energy systems will be spread out across six different housing development sites including Radmore Village in Radisson, Winmore Village in Winter, Stone Lake Senior Housing in Stone Lake, Exeland Senior Housing in Exeland, Plainview Village in Exeland, and Vista Village in Hayward.

To assist in keeping the costs low for the project, Legacy Solar Cooperative and Renew Wisconsin have both joined in to award SCHA with grants to help fund the initiative through the Solar For Good Program - a program specifically designed to help make solar more affordable.

Legacy Solar Cooperative (LSC) is fortunate to have a team of individuals with a diverse level of expertise in all subjects solar and is driven to help the statewide adoption of community-centered solar projects.

North Central Power and the Northern States Power Company (XCEL Energy) will also be interconnecting with the solar systems to provide power to the homes rented out by SCHA.

SCHA provides safe homes to families in Sawyer County, WI, regardless of any financial situation. In the early 1970s the Sawyer County Government recognized the need for affordable housing in Sawyer County and thereby created the Sawyer County Housing Authority.

Carlson Electric is an electrical contractor and top rated solar installer serving all of northwest WI and the surrounding market areas.
