People with Chronic Conditions Are Visiting Their Doctors Less, Choosing Online Peer Support Groups Instead
The HealthUnlocked Annual User Survey reports that there’s been a 41% increase in people deciding a visit to their doctor was unnecessary, as they become more informed about their conditions.
New York, NY, November 24, 2018 --(PR.com)-- People are visiting their doctors less as a result of access to information found through online peer-support communities.
The HealthUnlocked Annual User Survey reports that there’s been a 41% increase in people deciding a visit to their doctor was unnecessary, as they become more informed about their conditions.
Information found on the HealthUnlocked website is categorised in niche health communities that are expertly moderated by leading patient organisations such as The British Heart Foundation, Multiple Sclerosis Association of America and the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society among others. In these communities, people are able to give and receive support, whilst also having access to resources and local services that can support them in their health and wellness journeys.
The report surveys people that have at least one chronic condition (87% of users), have two or more conditions (52%) or are carers (5%) of people with ongoing health conditions. In the U.K, 15 million people are living with a long-term health condition and more than 125 million people in the U.S have at least one chronic condition, such as heart disease, COPD or diabetes. These numbers are expected to steadily increase year on year across the world.
The survey results have shown that it is uncommon for people to meet someone with the same health condition as themselves in everyday life, with 66% of our users saying they had not done so until they came to HealthUnlocked.
With access to condition-specific information, people are now more equipped to know what questions to ask and what results to expect. 58% of people, after using HealthUnlocked, feel more confident in managing their conditions and have improved interactions with their healthcare professionals.
HealthUnlocked is becoming an increasingly popular social network, with 4 million monthly users and growing numbers of traffic each month. We apply technology, including artificial intelligence (‘AI’), to connect and bring together people with the same health conditions, where they can share experiences and get answers to questions about their specific health situation. Information is available on over 250 different health conditions within more than 700 moderated communities.
