Artist Collective Behind the First A.I. Created Portrait Recently Auctioned by Christie’s to Make First Art Fair Appearance at Art Fort Lauderdale 2019
Obvious, an art collective based in Paris, to make first art fair appearance ever at Art Fort Lauderdale 2019 with two pieces for sale and a scheduled artist talk sharing how they made the A.I. created imagery.
Fort Lauderdale, FL, November 27, 2018 --(PR.com)-- Art Fort Lauderdale announces the appearance of the three 25-year-olds that are shaking up the art world with the use of ink, canvas and a complex artificial algorithm to create an A.I. created image. The collective will have two new pieces up for sale at pre-Christie’s auction pricing during the 3rd Annual "Art Fair on the Water" which returns for its third edition January 24 – 27, 2019. In addition the French collective will have a scheduled talk sharing the process behind the first A.I. generated art piece during Art Fort Lauderdale’s artDISCOURSE Series taking place at multiple venues across Fort Lauderdale.
The AI painting, titled Portrait of Edmond de Belamy was sold at the Christie’s auction house in New York for nearly half a million dollars in October – nearly 45 times the estimated selling price of $10,000. Art Fort Lauderdale will be the first art fair to exhibit the collective’s work from that collection for sale and will be one of the first art fairs to have artwork generated by an algorithm for sale.
Obvious' work uses a large number of carefully selected input images with common visual features and the Generative Adversarial Network algorithm (GAN). The (GAN) was made up of two parts (the generator and the discriminator) with the generator creating new images by trying to fool the discriminator into thinking the images are real.
The resolution of the generated images is enhanced using upscaling algorithms that infer a high definition version of the image and is then printed on canvas with an inkjet printer, framed and signed with a math formula showing the reaction between generator and discriminator.
"We are very excited to come to Fort Lauderdale next January for Art Fort Lauderdale to talk about Art and Artificial Intelligence and show some of our A.I generated pieces. We are also looking forward to discovering the Fort Lauderdale art scene and engaging with the people behind it," says Gauthier Bruno Marie Vernier of Obvious.
With a planned maximum attendance of 3,000 visitors in 2019, Art Fort Lauderdale continues to push the envelope in the art fair world with unique experiences that help carve a space in the art fair world for the City of Fort Lauderdale as a premier location to view, interact with and purchase art along with giving art aficionados, residents and visitors a cultural experience that is memorable, interactive and engaging.
“As we work towards distinguishing our fair in the competitive art fair world, we are always looking for opportunities to feature artists that are breaking the mold like we are and adding more opportunities for unimaginable discovery for our attendees,” said Art Fort Lauderdale Co-Founder | Managing Director Evan Snow. “Flying in artists like Obvious to exhibit at our fair and talk about their work gives our local community a front row seat and access to world-renowned talent that are pushing the boundaries of art on a global scale.”
