Are Wealth and Status Worth the Price-When That Price is Your Own Daughter?
San Diego, CA, March 21, 2008 --(PR.com)-- In a highly anticipated follow-up to her saga Trinity’s Daughter, Betty Byrd creates a brilliant tale of intrigue and adventure set in the Texas oil country. Utopia Texas is about a woman who skillfully competes in the male-dominated world of big oil, and who will do whatever it takes to get what she wants.
Outskirts Press is pleased to announce the publication of Utopia Texas by Betty Byrd. She has seen it all—including drilling her very own oil well. Betty now brings her unique vision and experience to Utopia Texas, a riveting tale about an oil legend, Brya Harrison, who was made not born. A woman created by chance and circumstance. Part gambler, part geologist, Brya knows that in the parched West Texas oil field upbringing doesn’t matter, but status is everything.
Brya climbed onto the dozer track. She stood squinty-eyed, hand cupped over her eyes, Winchester 30-30 in the other hand. “I feel like a prisoner behind this barbed wire,” she said glaring into the weathered faces of one hundred protestors standing behind their cars at the end of the road. “Brock, we’re losing light. If I don’t cross that road by midnight tonight, I’ll be defeated.”
CBS television cameras followed her every move.
“Texas hell bitch go home!” yelled a man in tattered overalls.
She threw her arms up. “I have the right to develop my minerals, and I’m not going to let you tree-huggers stop me.” She turned to the reporters. “These people will not keep me from what’s mine.” Brya climbed down the dozer track. “Brock, teach me to drive this thing.”
“Sure. One hundred twenty-five pounds maneuvering 20 tons of machinery?”
Her eyes kept jumping to the gears. “Show me how to drive it and move over!”
Brya has worked hard to secure her position, but she finds her plans unravel when she discovers that her daughter, Olivia, is somehow “different,” and is forced to face the unfathomable—one startling revelation at a time. Drawn into a maelstrom of events fueled by her daughter’s indiscretions, Brya sets out to cover each one up—whatever the cost. But will she be able to combat the demons plaguing her daughter as skillfully as she is able to face down her competition in the cutthroat world of big oil?
In this stunning follow-up to the author’s debut novel, Trinity’s Daughter, Betty Byrd has woven a brilliant tale of wealth, greed, love, and the pursuit of power—and how one particular woman holds her own in the male-dominated oil business.
Reviews
“Big oil, big land, and larger-than-life characters all spell Texas. But Brya’s family has a host of dark secrets as well. Able to face down the competition in a cut-throat business of men, can she also face the demons plaguing her daughter before those pass down to the next generation of the family’s women? Utopia Texas is Texana at its most raw. And in the end, its most redemptive.” —Susan Mary Malone, author, By the Book
“Betty Byrd has created a story that is as intense as an oil well fire—volatile and explosive. Utopia Texas will make you feel as if you lived it, while being forever thankful you didn’t.” — J.D. Smith, host of Pursuing the Blues, KCLAFM.com, Los Angeles, California
“The oil field has its share of personalities that are larger than life. Fueled by strong wills and old-fashioned guts in order face the unthinkable, Byrd’s Utopia Texas is compulsively readable.” —Bill Bledsoe, Petroleum Engineer, Fort Worth, Texas
