Eugene, OR, December 13, 2018 --(PR.com)-- The Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) has announced that noted curator and arts educator Namita Gupta Wiggers will be the keynote speaker at its 2019 annual conference in Chicago, IL. The 2019 conference is the 50th anniversary of the founding of SNAG, which also took place in Chicago in 1969. The theme of the conference is “The Loop: Coming Full Circle - 50 Years of SNAG.” The conference will take place at the Palmer House hotel, May 22 - 25, 2019.
Wiggers is a highly-regarded curator, educator, and writer based in Portland, Oregon. She is the Director of the Master of Arts in Critical and Historical Craft Studies program at Warren Wilson College in North Carolina. Wiggers also leads the Critical Craft Forum group. From 2004 - 2014 she served as the Curator and then Director and Chief Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Craft, in Portland, Oregon.
The title of her keynote address will be “Bending the Notes.” In music, “bending a note” refers to a technique for musicians to expand the capacity of an instrument to reveal sounds beyond its normal range -- and beyond the composer's notes on a page. In honor of SNAG’s 50th anniversary, her address will synthesize the histories of jewelry and craft in North America, bending the “notes” into a socio-cultural narrative that includes those who make and the work they make in conversation with those who write, curate, and sell.
In 1969, seven jewelry and metal artists formed SNAG at a meeting in Chicago. They were united by a desire to strengthen the jewelry and metals field through professional conferences and quality exhibitions. SNAG has since become a large creative community from diverse backgrounds, including artist-designers, makers, collectors, curators, historians, patrons, and the metalsmithing-curious.
“The Loop” will be SNAG’s 48th Annual Conference and will celebrate the organization’s first 50 years by focusing on the history of the field and SNAG’s vital place within that history. Along with presentations that look back, exploring significant moments and concepts, the conference will also emphasize critical discourse, concepts/ideas, and technical presentations that speak to current questions and issues in the field today. The 2019 Conference will launch SNAG into a year-long 50th Anniversary celebration, culminating with the 2020 conference, which will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its very first conference.
