Writer Betsy S. Franz Wants to Help Builders Educate New Homeowners to Take Care of Their Share of the Environment

Melbourne, FL, April 10, 2008 --(PR.com)-- In March of 2003, Betsy Franz set out on a monumental goal: to try to convince all property owners to take responsibility for Their Share of the environment.

“I think people have always been quick to blame decreases in wildlife populations on all the new development,” Franz said. “My goal has always been to encourage homeowners to realize that we all play a part in protecting local wildlife. Anyone who owns a piece of property can create wildlife habitat.”

Franz began her personal crusade by taking Habitat Steward training from the National Wildlife Federation. The NWF Habitat Steward program trains volunteers in the steps necessary to create backyard wildlife habitats. The trained stewards can then use their training to help educate others. Once homeowners take the steps to create a backyard wildlife habitat, they can then go a step further and apply for certification through the National Wildlife Federation.

“The NWF Backyard Wildlife Habitat program has been around since 1973,” Franz said. “It is a well-recognized program and it also provided a quantifiable way to gauge how many more people are making an effort to create wildlife friendly landscapes.”

“At the time I took my training in 2003, there were 117 certified Habitats in Brevard County and about 34,000 nationwide. There are now almost 350 certified habitats in Brevard County, and over 90,000 nationwide.”

As a freelance writer, Franz focuses much of her writing on topics related to backyard wildlife and the environment. Her environmental articles have appeared in many publications including Florida Wildlife Magazine, Florida Sportsman, Florida Gardening, South Carolina Wildlife, the Louisiana Conservationist , E-the Environmental Magazine and others. She has also published two journals, The Wildlife Habitat Journal: Restoring and Exploring Wildlife Habitat in Your Own Backyard and Wonders Never Cease: Restoring the Wonder in Your Life by Exploring the Nature Around You.

In addition, Franz maintains several websites that teach people how to create wildlife friendly yards (www.backyardbrevard.com) and how to Take Care of Their Share of the environment (www.takecareofyourshare.com). The sites even contain an online form that allows people to submit questions that can’t be answered through her websites.

In conjunction with National Wildlife Week, April 19–27th, Franz will be giving a seminar about creating backyard wildlife habitats and the NWF backyard wildlife habitat program on Saturday, April 19th at 10 am at Rockledge Gardens.

The seminar will provide steps for creating a wildlife friendly landscape, followed by assistance in filling out the National Wildlife Federation Habitat Certification Application. Copies of both of Franz’s journals will be available for purchase.

“The Green movement is at its peak right now,” Franz said. “Many people are changing to energy efficient lightbulbs, finding ways to save water and switching to re-usable shopping bags. But many of them haven’t taken the next step of re-creating the animal habitat that was destroyed when their home was built. It’s my goal to help them realize how easy and enjoyable it is to make these changes.”

The seminar is free but seating is limited. Please call 321-636-7662 to register.
