Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children & Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Get National Designation as Only Rocky Mountain Region Hospital with Level IV Maternal Unit & Level IV NICU
Denver, CO, June 11, 2019 --(PR.com)-- In advance of Colorado introducing the Levels of Maternal Care Criteria developed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center has been recognized for providing Level IV Maternal Care (highest level available) by the Colorado Perinatal Care Quality Collaborative (CPCQC). This designation was awarded after conducting a LOCATe survey of the facility with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Together with the Level IV (the highest level available) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children (RMHC), the unique hospital campus has cemented its leadership and commitment to care for high risk moms and babies across the Rocky Mountain region.
A Level IV maternal program designation highlights a regional perinatal health care center that provides medical and surgical care for the most complex maternal conditions as well as care for critically ill pregnant women and fetuses throughout pregnancy, delivery and postpartum. Additionally, the designation recognizes the hospital’s maternal transport options provided by AirLife, the critical care OB-trained nurses, and the Hybrid OR. RMHC’s unique Mobile Training Center, which offers hands-on outreach education programs for providers across the region, rounds out another component of the Level IV maternal program designation.

Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children complements the Level IV Maternal Care program with the excellent care in its Level IV NICU, the largest in the Rocky Mountain region. Babies travel from a seven state region for care by the maternal-fetal and neonatology teams in the RMHC NICU.

Levels of Maternal Care as designated by ACOG include: Level I (usually reserved for birthing centers where an uncomplicated birth is expected); Level II (basic care programs with the ability to stabilize unanticipated maternal-fetal or neonatal conditions so that mom/baby can be transferred to a facility with a higher level of care if needed); Level III (specialty care where diagnosis and limited treatment is available for high-risk moms with the ability to transfer to a Level IV facility as needed); and Level IV (able to provide all services previously noted, plus additional highly specialized maternal-fetal and neonatal care, if needed).
Likewise, NICUs are broken into 4 levels: Level I (for healthy, full-term babies with the ability to transfer to facilities if advanced care is needed); Level II (generally able to care for babies born at greater than 32 weeks gestation or those who are recovering from a more serious condition); Level III (for babies born at less than 32 weeks gestation and specialists available who offer a range of pediatric medical subspecialties) and Level IV (home to specialized teams that can facilitate transport into the unit from other NICUs and where specialists can provide surgical repair of complex congenital or acquired conditions).
