Anchorage, AK, April 02, 2008 --(PR.com)-- An exciting series of events for educators will take place in Anchorage, Alaska during the weekend of April 4th – 6th. Borders Books will host the Alaska premiere of ODT's new DVD, Many Ways to See the World at 1100 E Dimond Blvd, Anchorage, Alaska 99515. The DVD will be shown throughout the weekend at the store on an on-going basis. Teachers and homeschooling parents will have the opportunity to take advantage of “special event discounts” on maps and other educational resources throughout the weekend.

Many Ways to See the World is a fascinating 30-minute exploration into the challenges of creating a map and the minds of twelve visionary mapmakers. It illustrates the unique backgrounds, philosophies, values, and politics, which led each mapmaker to select a particular mathematical formula to create their projection. This provocative presentation explains how maps are not impartial reference objects, but rather instruments of communication, persuasion, and power. After viewing the DVD, understanding how world maps are created will seem as simple as peeling an orange. You will never look at any map the same way again.

Dr. Denis Wood, curator of the award-winning exhibition of maps at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York City, and the map exhibit at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, and ODT author says, "It takes many points of view to understand the truth. We can only understand our world if we are willing to look at it from a variety of perspectives. This guided tour of maps and images will absolutely stretch your mind.”

Howard Zinn, author of A People’s History of the United States says: “Many Ways To See The World is more than a fascinating lesson about maps. It opens the mind of the viewer to profound perspectives on the interconnectedness of human beings everywhere. I hope it will be shown in classrooms all over the country.” The DVD will explain the principles behind, and need for, Equal Area maps. The DVD will show two different Equal Area world maps: the Peters and the Hobo-Dyer. The Borders store will also have for sale a brand new Equal Area map of the USA (see: http://odtmaps.com/detail.asp_Q_product_id_E_E-A-USA-AK). This new USA map is the first and only map to ever show Alaska at its true size, and in true proportion to the mainland 48 states. The map is explained in a recent article in the Map Report magazine: http://odtmaps.com/pdf/mapreport.pdf
