Guatemalan Lowbrow Artist Tokebi Chosen by International Band Mastodon for the Creation of Their 2019 European Poster Tour and Merchandise
Guatemalan Lowbrow artist Tokebi announced today that his art was chosen by award-winning American heavy metal band Mastodon for the creation of their 2019 UK and European Tour Poster and Merchandise.
Los Angeles, CA, June 16, 2019 --(PR.com)-- Guatemalan Lowbrow artist Tokebi announced today that his art was chosen by award-winning American heavy metal band Mastodon for the creation of their 2019 UK and European Tour Poster and Merchandise. Tokebi is an international artist who is known for this dynamic and colorful skulls with retro influences.
Tokebi art was chosen after Mastodon’s drummer Brann Taylor found him in the social media channel Instagram. Tokebi stated, “Brann contacted me and asked me if he could use my art for their tour and also for the song Jaguar God, I couldn’t believe the message was real.”
Tokebi currently lives in his hometown Guatemala and has been an artist there and abroad for 9 years, living in Asia half of this time which helped developed his unique color palette. Regarding the piece, Tokebi stated, “I created a skull wearing a jaguar mask, inspired in the masks used by the Mayan civilization, something I grew up with. The colors are highly influenced by the vibrant colors one can see in the streets of Seoul or Tokyo.” The poster is already been used by the band in their tour and the merchandise will be released at their website.
About Tokebi the artist: Tokebi, is a Guatemalan born artist, illustrator and university professor, internationally known for his bright neon colors and quirky line work, mixing retro and sci-fi influences, and using skulls and skeletons as main characters. Tokebi has participated in artistic spaces such as the collective exhibitions "Nothing Serious I" and "Nothing Serious II" in Seoul, South Korea in 2014 and 2015, and also participated in the exhibition "Etereo Estereo" held in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala in 2018. currently teaching Web & Graphic Design, Communication and Illustration at the Istmo University in Guatemala City.
