New Book Chronicles History of LA, Woman Ahead of Her Time as Told Through Letters
Dog Ear Publishing reviews a book based on letters from the author’s mother, an inspiring figure who took the world by storm and had a career outside the home when not many women dared to do so.
Claremont, CA, July 01, 2019 --(PR.com)-- Agnes Edwards Partin graduated from the University of California-Berkeley, Phi Beta Kappa – and that was just one of many accomplishments this pioneering figure achieved during her lifetime. Grace Moremen presents an edited collection of letters from her mother’s time in California, released by Dog Ear Publishing, that aims to inspire others even as they present a snapshot of the time.
“Rising to the Challenge in Los Angeles: The Letters of Agnes Edwards Partin 1926-1956” details Agnes’ exploits in the city that is her new home. Letters cover her early days there as a newlywed and starting a literary agent business during the booming 1920s, as well as how the couple survived during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Both were civil servants at the time so their jobs were not in jeopardy, although belt tightening certainly took place.
Agnes’ letters also describe Los Angeles in the 1940s during World War II and the city in the postwar years, from 1946-1956. Short descriptions before each letter put them in context, and archival photos from the Los Angeles Public Library as well as historic postcards and photos from a photo album created by Agnes help tell her incredible story.
Although the letters are from an earlier era and provide insight into a time when many married women chose to stay at home, the issues Agnes struggled with are ones familiar to women of today.
“Partin’s decisions regarding the work-family balance and her commitment to her own education and career shine light on today’s women and our similar tensions,” the book’s foreword notes. “Juggling house payments, worrying about family finances when (her husband) loses his job, deciding on career changes, making time for her doctoral dissertation in the midst of work and her life in a family of teenagers are topics that today’s families continue to address.”
Moremen has been writing for nearly 50 years. She has a bachelor’s degree in international relations from Pomona College, a master’s degree in religion and art from the University of Chicago Divinity School and a master’s degree in British history from the University of California-Berkeley. She taught English as a second language in the Los Angeles School District and worked for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
She has written other books, starting with her first, “No, No, Natalie.” Her others include “Adolphus Frederick Duke of Cambridge, 1774-1850,” “Student Life at the University of California, Berkeley, During and After World War I, 1917-1921” and “Boston Glass Ceiling, 1922-192.” She cowrote “Loving LA and the Low Carbon Way: 24 Adventures in the City of Angels via Public Transportation” with Jacqueline Chase. She and her husband now live in Claremont, Calif.
