If You’ve Ever Dealt with Prematurity, in Vitro, Adoption or Simply the Birth of a Child… a Father’s Tribute to 14 Ounces of Love
Miami, FL, April 03, 2008 --(PR.com)-- After utilizing in vitro fertilization, David and his wife were ecstatic to learn of the baby growing within Susan Loewenstein. This joy, however, came to an abrupt halt when the family faced every expectant parents’ worst nightmare-- their baby, Rachel, was born 4 months early. With a severe infection and a collapsed lung, Rachel’s weight dropped from a mere 18 ounces to a drastic 14 ounces and she was given a 1 in 1,000 chance of survival. New parents face discouraging news, similar to this, everyday. This father’s story is proof that some of the greatest gifts in life come in the smallest packages.
In his newly released book, “For the Love of Rachel: A Father’s Story” (Enalan Communications, September 2007), Dr. David Loewenstein tells an inspiring and hopeful story about a remarkable battle and tremendous transformation. Beautifully written, Loewenstein recounts tiny Rachel’s fight for survival during her 9-month stay in neonatal ICU and how it changed his perspective on life, vastly rearranging his priorities. He describes the challenges his family faces as they cope with Rachel’s subsequent special needs, and how the whole situation changed him and his wife’s view of the importance of life and having a biological child. This is what inspired his family’s voyage to China to bring home his second daughter, Amy—a little sister for Rachel. This story offers a new perspective on the meaning of parenting and family, and can be truly inspiring to those who can relate to their situation.
Dr. David Loewenstein is Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami. He is also Director of Research at the Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach. Dr. Loewenstein is the author of over 100 scientific publications and abstracts in the areas of aging, Alzheimer’s Disease, cognitive rehabilitation and neuropsychological assessment.
“For the Love of Rachel is a gripping narrative that offers hope and inspiration. Rachel’s is an amazing story of inspiration…” Richard R. Blake for ReaderViews
“An inspirational and moving story…” Eva Ritvo, MD, Chair, Department of Psychiatry, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Beach, Florida
“Rachel’s story is humbling.” Shahnaz Duara, MD, Medical Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Jackson Memorial Hospital and Professor of Pediatrics, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine
