Each of Wolfert’s three stories is told against the backdrop of one of the most fascinating yet very different periods in history; the American Revolution, the Civil Rights movement, and the French Revolution. In the title novella, we meet Elizabeth Monroe, the young wife of the American ambassador to France at the time of the French Revolution. Elizabeth struggles with her own values and threatens her husband’s diplomatic position as she fights to overturn the brutal death sentence given to a dear friend, while the world around her spins in a flurry of political confusion. In “The End of March”, readers travel forward in time to 1965 and the heart of the civil rights movement. Willi Carotti must decide whether to remain with her loving family, or join the Civil Rights movement to pursue the dream promised by Dr. Martin Luther King. And finally, in “The Queen of America” we meet a new side of the beloved wife of the first American president, Martha Washington. Martha’s inner turmoil and fears are brought to life as she struggles being partnered to one of the greatest men of all time.
In all three of these moving stories, Wolfert’s meticulous research paints a vivid and fascinating picture of each period in history. Martha Washington, Elizabeth Monroe and Willi Carotti are thus brought to life by the author’s deep knowledge of historical events, and infused with the emotional character and inner strength each woman needs to face her darkest fears and march on into the unknown.
