New To Massachusetts: The JumpStart Coalition
Boston, MA, April 05, 2008 --(PR.com)-- December of 2007 marked the introduction of the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy in Massachusetts. Originating at the national level in 1995, the Jump$tart Coalition is a non-profit organization that works to inform students ages K-12 about managing their personal financial affairs, and the importance of planning for their financial futures. In a country where the savings rate is virtually non-existent, credit card debt is prominent, and if given the task most teenagers cannot balance a checkbook, Jump$tart strives to reverse these trends through knowledge and implementation of useful everyday practices. In turn, MA Jump$tart seeks to apply these practices on more localized state level, encouraging the Massachusetts’ school systems to enact a curriculum that includes financial education.
Heading up MA Jump$tart is Needham resident Lawrence Glazer, managing partner at Boston-based Mayflower Advisors, LLC, a financial advisory firm. Accompanied by fellow Mayflower Advisors’ managing partner and Andover resident Steven Dimitriou, and finally Appleton Partners’ Senior Vice President James Ladge, a Newton resident, these individuals are currently serving as the board of directors for MA Jump$tart. “We are extremely excited to be a part of Jump$tart,” comments Glazer. “Given the current economic, credit, and debt issues affecting local residents, there is a timely demand for this education.”
There is certainly a great deal of promise and growth potential for this organization within Massachusetts. The national Jump$tart Coalition has already declared April “Youth Financial Literacy Month,” and on April 24th and 29th, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston will be hosting free personal financial workshops for teens.
Massachusetts Jump$tart is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization created in 2007 and dedicated to improving the personal financial education of students throughout Massachusetts. More information about MA Jump$tart and its activities is available on its web site: www.majumpstart.org
