AC Media Host the Premiere Screening of “I Am More Than My Hair”
New Film Tell the Stories of Women with Alopecia.
Silver Spring, MD, September 13, 2019 --(PR.com)-- AC Media will host a Premiere Screening on October 20, 2019 from 5:00-7:00pm, at AFI Silver Theatre, 8633 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, MD 20910. The film, "I Am More Than My Hair," is a companion piece to a newly released book, of the same title, by Alyscia Cunningham, the Author and Film Director. Both outstanding works look at females with a medical condition that caused alopecia (baldness; the partial or complete absence of hair from areas of the body where it normally grows). The documentary film features interviews with females who've experienced alopecia and the connection of their emotions to the U.S. media's standards of beauty.
The screening of "I Am More Than My Hair" will be followed by a Q&A, a signing of Alyscia’s companion photography book, and a reception. Meet the women who participated, hear about the medical aspect of alopecia from Dermatologist Dr. St. Surin-Lord, and join the discussion of redefining beauty standards.
“The film has been a four-year journey in the making,” says Alyscia, who is based in Silver Spring. “Finally seeing it come into fruition feels like giving birth.”
The film traces the connection between the beauty standards that young girls learn, and the journey of self-discovery taken by women who’ve experienced hair loss. “If you look to the outside world, the media, to define what’s beautiful, I’m certainly not that,” says Sheila Bridges, whose story is included in the film. Throughout the documentary, the women discuss how their perspectives on beauty have evolved as they found new models of beauty and questioned what they were taught as girls.
RSVP on Eventbrite.
