Swedish Medical Center First in Colorado to Use New Treatment for Brain Aneurysms
Rocky Mountain region neuroscience center of excellence introduces technology to treat challenging aneurysms with positive benefits for patients.
Englewood, CO, September 30, 2019 --(PR.com)-- HCA Healthcare/HealthONE’s Swedish Medical Center is the first hospital in Colorado to use a new aneurysms embolization system to treat wide neck bifurcationaneurysm - an abnormal bulging of a blood vessel in the brain.
If an aneurysm ruptures, serious consequences including severe functional disability, loss of cognitive function and death may occur. These types of wide neck bifurcation aneurysms may account for nearly 35 percent of all aneurysms and are historically more difficult to treat due to their location at the place where a blood vessel branches into two parts. However using this new device, surgeons at Swedish are able to treat these types of aneurysms safely through minimally invasive endovascular techniques.
“This new therapy allows us to treat these difficult aneurysms with a single device rather than potentially having to place multiple implants into the blood vessel,” says Ian Kaminsky, MD, neurointerventional surgeon. “Patients are able to be treated without an invasive brain surgery procedure allowing for much quicker recovery and potentially less need for medications after the procedure.”
The tiny device is made of ultra-fine wires that are braided together to form a flexible self-expanding mesh basket and is the first of its kind in the new category of intrasaccular (within the aneurysm sac) flow disrupters for aneurysm embolization. The device is deployed through a micro-catheter that is threaded through an artery in the patient’s groin into the aneurysm. Once in place, the device slows blood from further entering the aneurysm and will allow the aneurysm to seal over time.
